OMG! TIL there's a way to add back the long-since-removed capability to add your own custom search engines to Firefox.

In about:config, add a new boolean key browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh = true.

Then the "Add" button is available in search preferences (put %s where the query term goes).

I'm doing another one of my little surveys, this time to see which parts of using on the desktop are the most problematic, and the various issues people are having.

I'll make a video on these results next week, and depending on the answers, maybe I'll make more videos on specific issues, either to explain these topics, or to see how we could improve.

So, here is the form, feel free to fill it out and share it around, so we have as many answers as possible!

A policy on use of Generative AI has been accepted by the Minecraft Wiki community.

With development of new tools and technology, wikis have to keep up and evaluate risks and effects of those on the wiki and their communities. This policy is a result of exactly those evaluations.

You can see the new policy in here: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Wiki:Wiki_rules/Generative_AI_policy

This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

Is it just me, or does it seem like GitHub has stopped working on anything that’s not AI-related?

Yesterday we removed a mod called "Windows Borderless" which was found to contain malware.

⚠️If you are a Windows user and are one of the 372 people who downloaded and used a mod called "Windows Borderless", you are at risk. More info available here: https://blog.modrinth.com/p/windows-borderless-malware-disclosure

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: This mod is called, exactly, "Windows Borderless". There are other mods with similar names on Modrinth, which are NOT malware, such as "Borderless Mining", "Borderless", and "Borderless Mining Reworked"

Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

It's just a reminder that anything you post on any of these platforms can and will be used for profit. It's just a matter of time until all your messages on Discord, Twitter etc. are scraped, fed into a model and sold back to you.

Kinda crazy that artificial intelligence needs the entire output of a nuclear reactor but actual intelligence can run on Twix bars and cocaine, for example.

Please stop using generated art for thumbnails and illustrations for videos and blog posts that aren’t generated themselves. It gives people the impression that the post is spammy bullshit. Starting to see people dismiss links out of hand just because of the preview thumbnail on social media

Police around the country are beginning to crack down with brutal violence on students demonstrating in solidarity with Gaza. This video from Chile shows how to extinguish tear gas canisters quickly, safely, and easily. Please circulate it widely!

To deal with tear gas canisters, take a water jug with a wide mouth, pick up the canister with protective gloves, drop it in the jug, and shake the jug while covering the top with your hand just enough that the gas doesn't get out.

It can help to put a little baking soda, dish soap, and/or vegetable oil in the jug of water—3 tablespoons of each to 1 liter of water.

Don't seal the bottle. You don't want it to explode.

Avoid using emoji as bullet points in social media posts. An emoji has a coded description that gets read by screen readers, and thus could confuse users who think that's part of the content. If you can't use standard lists, use dashes for bullet points or add line breaks.
