RT @komanoff It's tiring having to again refute poorly reported scare stories like today's NYT Metro "Congestion Pricing Could Bring Cleaner Air But Maybe Not for Everyone." Truth is, even taking zero credit for transit improvements, the toll will cut driving outside the zone.

All those trips into the congestion zone that will be deterred (not just rerouted) emanate from outside, so their disappearance will cut non-zone VMT. even South Bronx, as fewer trips from Scarsdale etc. pass through

RT @streetsblognyc The NYC Planning showed off a big plan for the new PANYNJ Bus Terminal ... and we mean "big." That and other news in today's headlines:

RT @BillOdeaJC The NJ Turnpike expansion in the downtown neighborhood of Jersey City I represent will only further contribute to environmental degradation, displacement of communities, and encourage increased traffic congestion. A plan that also includes investment in light rail expansion, Ferry Service and other mass transit options that will encourage commuters to opt off of the Turnpike sooner must be part of the solution. We need a sustainable solution.

Anniversary blog post from May 30, 2012: The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a report on Dangerous Roads for Walking, which was a good idea in general, but I recommended measuring the danger per mile, not just on the road with that name, since the lengths varied.

A spot-check on crashmapper suggests that some roads, like the Bowery and Fourteenth Street, were a lot safer in 2011-2024, while others, like Brighton Beach Avenue and the Grand Concourse, were not.

The Voice of the Subways, Bernie Wagenblast, will be among the judges at the May 31 all-gender Miss Subways 2024 contest at Coney Island USA's Sideshows by the Seashore Theater (1208 Surf Ave)!

"Contestants will represent their subway line of choice, answer subway-themed questions, and show off their talents, all for a chance to represent NYC straphangers as the next Miss Subways."

RT @jalexa1218 On Friday I went to this Mexican bar in Brooklyn. All the tables were full, so people had to stand. Before this summer they had extended their outdoor seating area to the street but now it is parking for one graffiti covered truck

Every truck VMT is a policy failure.

RT @usdotfhwa At 8.3 billion vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), Interstate 80 leads the nation with the most annual VMT, followed closely by I-75 at 8.1 billion and I-40 at 7.7 billion. https://fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/hpms.cfm

"The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced today that it has awarded an $83.3 million grant to NJ TRANSIT to transform the historic Brick Church station in East Orange into a modern, fully accessible station that preserves historic features and improves the customer experience. Highlights include replacing the current low-level platforms with accessible high-level platforms and adding elevators."

@capntransit What is historic about that station other than it is old? I've never heard of it before, so it can't be that historic. What are we losing by not tearing it down and rebuilding to modern standards?

RT @aarmlovich Decommodification--ditching the price system in favor of a lottery, waitlist, or other rationing--can be done, but urban housing scarcity is a physical fact

It is possible to turn high prices into 20-year waitlists, for example, but it will not fit 100 families into 90 homes

Anniversary blog post from May 29, 2010, in which I draw on some musings from Engineer Scotty about what motivates people to choose a particular transportation mode, and distill them to four categories: Availability, Value, Amenities and Glamour.

RT @openplans NYC's "roadway dining structures...occupy parking spaces or other parts of the street." Does outdoor dining occupy "parking spaces"? Or does free curbside parking actually occupy public space, homogenizing & clogging a useful & potentially versatile piece of our streets?

@capntransit @openplans sounds like a lawyer for McDonald’s wrote this bullshit law. In a city that was incredibly hard hit by this virus and still struggling to rebound, this is just another slap in the face.

Anniversary blog post from May 28, 2010: We do not make just one mode choice. We make mode choices repeatedly, of at least three kinds: Single Trips, Habits and Investments. We're not going to get people out of cars by addressing only one kind of choice.

@capntransit If you don't build it, they won't come.

Most Americans don't have any transit within walking distance of home. To use it at all, we probably have to drive to a transit station and try to find parking there.
