For those of you interested in recording to cassette, here’s a good overview of the different types:

  • Ferric oxide (type I)
  • Chromium oxide (type II)
  • Metal (type IV)

There is a type III, but it was rarely in use.

This video gives a good summary of how each type sounds. Most people agree that metal (type IV) sounds the best.

@atomicpoet If you are recording to metal tape, be sure to use a machine that has a setting for metal or Type IV, as metal tape wants a higher bias. Not an issue for playback, only recording.

@StillIRise1963 Masks remind people that COVID is still here. That makes people want to rush through our shopping and go, rather than lingering and buying more stuff. The robber barons don't like that.

They are going to like it even less when we stay away from their state in droves. Won't even change planes there if this is enacted.

@StillIRise1963 Not sure where you are traveling from, but there are long-distance trains to LA from most of the country (might have to change in Chicago if coming from the east coast).

We have family on the east coast, so we take the California Zephyr a lot. Beautiful train ride through the Rockies and the Sierras.

I am White, my wife is Black, so racism is very much a concern when and where travelling.

The train seems especially safe in that regard. The outward signs of racism, etc. are usually facing the road, not the railroad tracks, so we don't have to look at them. No yahoo in a pickup truck is going to mess with a train. It is the best way to see places that have beautiful scenery but an insane population.

Most of the sleeping car attendants are Black as historically been the case, and they always seem happy to see us (some of them recognize us from prior trips too).

A sleeping compartment also provides a high level of isolation from COVID exposure compared to any other public conveyance.

@StillIRise1963 Capitol Limited out of Washington DC to Chicago, going through some really pretty parts of the Appalachians before it got dark, then in the morning we were getting close to Chicago.
California Zephyr out of Chicago, cross the Mississippi late afternoon, by morning we're going up-up-up into Denver. Nice sunny day for pictures, snowy at the high elevations either side of the Moffett Tunnel, less so as we descended into Glenwood Canyon. In the dark for Utah and some of Nevada, LOTS of snow in the Sierras.

@GottaLaff We gott some stuff delivered in a POD last year. Rather they tried to deliver it. It comes on a REALLY BIG truck. They couldn't get it in here because of the trees.
