Itโ€™s pretty clear that @mls has a really big problem with referees. Tonightโ€™s match was a complete garbage fire from the referee Boiko. Thereโ€™s no way a match should have 13 yellow cards, let alone the red cards. He completely lost control of the game. 12 minutes of stoppage time at the end because of his incompetence?!

Itโ€™s hard enough to have to beat the other team without also having to beat the referee.

At least the Crew got the draw.

Itโ€™s so upsetting that houses have exterior areas that just look like this.

Itโ€™s like M.C. Escher designed a relaxed west coast gallows with full ocean views.

Creating a really very laid-back sense of infinite dread.

Check it out, subscribe, review, + above all, please share: https://www.hanselminutes.com/900/from-ethernet-to-geothermal-energy-with-bob-metcalfe

@shanselman This episode caused me to send the link to GEO to my dad, who works in the oil and gas industry. He told me they had looked at the geothermal potential of some wells they drilled here in the Appalachian Basin. He said he might have to reach out to them. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I love how you find people doing new things in unexpected ways. Congratulations on 900 episodes!

Russia is making it clear that they intend, at minimum, a provocation around the nuclear plant starting on July 5. They have also made credible threats that anyone fluent in Kremlinese would be able to parse of wanting to blow the whole thing up. It's a serious possibility.

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone else in the community has experienced their Apple Watch giving them a loud noise warning when going fast downhill or when thereโ€™s a pretty good headwind? I get these frequently, and I used to think it was just a weird way that my watch was situated between my sleeve and glove when riding in the winter. It continues to do it with no sleeve or glove interference. Wind can definitely be loud, will sustained descending cause hearing loss?

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@amd Thatโ€™s the only thing I can figure. I know that different cars get weird pulsations inside the vehicle that can be uncomfortable when you have the window down at highway speeds. I feel like this is happening on the watch at a much smaller scale. Seems like something that would have come up in testing at Apple given how many features there are for outdoor activities on the watch? Maybe if I tell it Iโ€™m doing a cycling workout it will ignore the noise?

Here in little olโ€™ Akron, OH, there is a cool little company called Tiny Circuits that had an Indegogo campaign that I backed for their TinyTV2 project. I got mine in the mail on Friday and uploaded a few videos from my phone to it. Itโ€™s so wild.

You can even use their video converter app on Linux via WINE!

Call me a happy customer.

chrishuck, to Engineering
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

This morning, I was watching a video about a very technical subject, and the presenter mentioned several times that they wanted to keep the design โ€œsimpleโ€ or โ€œas simple as possibleโ€ without explaining what that meant.

I find this to be a big problem in . People always tell us to โ€œjust make it simpleโ€. My first question is always โ€œSimple for whom?โ€

I can make something easy to manufacture but hard to use and vice-versa. There is no universal โ€œsimpleโ€, just trade offs.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@DrSuzanne I believe there is typically an assumption by the person requesting that something be โ€œsimpleโ€ means that it will be easy for the end user, AND, therefore, also easy for the designer. Sometimes, this can happen, but certainly, not always. People also assume that simple=inexpensive. This is also sometimes true.

Many people have no idea how many things they think are โ€œsimpleโ€ to use have enormous amounts of complexity hidden from them allowing that to happen.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@brrbrr The thing I think is hilarious is the idea that engineers WANT to make things complex just for the hell of it. Iโ€™m trying to solve YOUR problem based on the (usually, poorly defined) goals you tell me. Generally, the initial assumption is fast and cheap with materials on-hand. Then, add complexity until the actual goal is achieved.

A lot of people think โ€œsimpleโ€ completes the triangle of fast-cheap-good. Most of the time, you only get two of those.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@brrbrr I deal with people that think engineers always try to make things difficult for everyone, and theyโ€™re helping everyone by telling us to โ€œjust make it simpleโ€. Because weโ€™ve never thought of thatโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‚

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@phf I disagree. It is precisely the understanding that there are almost always trade offs in design that dictates why context matters. Something I can make fast and with parts on hand might get the job done, but it might be ugly and difficult for the end user to operate. If you want it to look nice and be easy for end user, you might have to wait for a longer design phase and parts we donโ€™t already have. Itโ€™s all trade offs that drive decisions. People just donโ€™t like it.

What kind of insane person sets their browser to prevent reopening of all previous tabs when you restart the browser? I just learned this is the default behavior on our corporate Edge installation and I canโ€™t change it ๐Ÿ˜ก

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@tripplehelix I do understand why it can be advantageous. I will often have done a lot of research and have a ton of tabs open and then have to restart for some reason and I donโ€™t want to have to bookmark all of those sites. Itโ€™s nice to just pick up where I left off. Iโ€™m probably most annoyed that I donโ€™t have the option to change it and there doesnโ€™t seem to be a good reason as to why.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@tripplehelix Weโ€™ve basically been herded to Edge by corporate IT. They have so many things locked down because theyโ€™re paranoid after a ransomware incident years ago. Many of the things they have in place donโ€™t make sense and actually hurt productivity. I canโ€™t even change my default page to load when I open a new tab.
