Luke (from ) made a really good point that I hadn't considered about the new feature. What about public computers? How many libraries, computer labs or internet cafes are going to be absolute hotbeds for personal data compromise? You know Microsoft will have the feature enabled by default and you know that even if people disable it, they'll randomly re-enable it. What happens on public computers where everyone shares one user account? 1/

shanselman,
@shanselman@hachyderm.io avatar

@gerowen Those will be “managed” (intuned) machines so the library would just disable it (like any other feature) using group policy. Most of those machines have “reset scripts” (our library does) when someone logs out. The user also never has Admin so they wouldn’t be able to make system changes or turn things back on.

I recently returned from a vacation w/my wife in Spain (our first time there!) and boy howdy - so amazing.

This was my first real vacation (i.e. more than a week, neither of us did any work while we were there) I've had since I left my old job in 2018 (well, there was this whole COVID thing…) and that alone made it magnificent.

But wow - Spain. So great.

Went to Madrid, San Sebastian, Bilbao, and Barcelona.
We talked tonight about what we'd like to revisit as well as new places.

Suggestions?

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

My opinion as a technologist with all things like this is always should be optional, auditable, local, and transparent

@ThibaultDu @Powareverb @gerowen @GossiTheDog I don’t work on the project but I find the NPU tech and the open SDKs behind it (and onyx runtime) interesting. My opinion is it should be not just opt-in but something you download explicitly and install if you want it. Similar to RescueTime and TimeSnapper and AugmenD and other apps that have done this stuff for years (using OCR). This should be as secure as your browser history, encrypted at rest, non roaming, etc.

I’ve had mixed feelings about manager readme. On one hand I do a verbal version in my first meeting with new collaborators to let them know I communicate directly but mean well.

OTOH, the power dynamic as a manager can read as a list of flaws your team has to put up with.

shanselman,
@shanselman@hachyderm.io avatar

@carnage4life This reads like a list of things he’s definitely not good at but he’s also definitely not willing to work on

This new iPad Pro is fantastic. Very happy with it. Except it’s also not a MacBook Air. All this power and this 3 legged OS. Stage Manager is a weak simulacrum of a window manager. Please unify these operating systems.

to my naked eye I can see a faint purple and greenish hue to the northern dark skies but an iPhone photo totally amps up everything to an almost dreamlike quality. This is unedited straight out of the phone while it sat on a fence post.

Don’t see any actual movement or flare ups, but will try again in a couple more hours.

@stiller_leser can run on an appletv, raspberry pi, or inside a container. You may have a small extra bit of compute laying around.
