So per Mission Local (https://missionlocal.org/2024/05/what-was-the-plan-understaffed-overcrowded-sf-jails/) 50% of the jail inmates in San Francisco are black.

SF's population is slightly less than 6% black.

So in case you were worried that places like Louisiana or Alabama were the most racist in the nation, put your mind at ease.

First reaction to reading on the Verge about a new vertically integrated and attractively designed heat pump system with closed, non-Google/Apple smarts from some xooglers is: "well I'm not buying that, it'll probably be shut down or unsupported within 5 years"

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

Like honestly, it doesn't matter. Not buying anything that is the slightest bit of infrastructural or capital-ish from startups anymore. It doesn't last and you can't rely on it being around.

"[the Home PIs would allow access to developers to build a complex app to manage any aspect of a smart home], like turning on the lights automatically before the food delivery driver arrives”

can't wait for Postmates (Uber) to ask for permissions to control your lights!

it's an interesting exercise in how far and what people will trade for convenience (until, perhaps, the costs/downsides are visibly illustrated)

if the choice is between:

  • get food delivered and Postmates/Uber now has access to your smart home system; or
  • don't get food delivered

how many people would choose not to get food delivered?

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

@Viss oh yeah, I'm on the side of “people will trade convenience for practically anything" and am super interested what they won't trade it for. Presumably anything unconnected. Like, "Uber wants access to my photos?!”

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

I suspect the number of people who would choose "don't get food delivered" over "get food delivered and Postmates/Uber now has access to your smart home system" would be negligible.

Even with high-profile failures. Which I think is a tension between a paternalistic state that would regulate against even permitting those apps to have that kind of access.

@Viss @fuzzychef seriously, banking regs exist for a reason and anything you've left money in you're effectively treating as a bank and would be pissed if it suddenly disappeared

Let's talk about secret cabals for doing good!

Pros: they work and are sometimes necessary in order to coordinate activity amongst like-minded progressive people!

Cons: addictive, hard to disband, remaining secret generally destructive, tend to be exclusionary not only by design but also unintentionally!

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

here's another Secret Cabal for Good survey!

If you have been in a Secret Caba for Good* your PERSONAL experience

  • I imagine 100% of people think their Secret Cabals are totally for good, especially including the fascists

In 2003, a friend ran her first 5k and raised money for a great cause, Guide Dogs for the Blind and I gave $20 happily. To this day, Guide Dogs mails me postcards every few months, no matter how many times my address changes. Today I got this text from the nonprofit 21 years after my sole donation.

My point is Customer Relations Management (CRM) software like Salesforce is too good at what it does and must be stopped.

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

@jessamyn @skry @mathowie the real reason is that we went generic first before thinking about whether we want to narrow down to specifics

danhon,
@danhon@dan.mastohon.com avatar

@jessamyn @skry @mathowie the slightly interesting addition to that is that when I was writing the stickers, generic ones didn't work so we tried to get more specific, which is why this one now exists:
