@datajake1999@dragonscave.space

I am totally blind, and I am interested in archiving rare software such as old screen readers and speech synthesizers. I am also an audio and mythology nerd.

@datajake1999 just checking to see if you got my dm or whatever they're called on here.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 I got it.

The Neural voices NVDA addon was updated. The default language is now English, and audio device fixes were implemented. The link is the same as before.

datajake1999,

@evilcookies98 Since the addon isn't in the store, you will have to update it by hand.

datajake1999,

@evilcookies98 That shouldn't be a problem.

datajake1999,

@mckensie @evilcookies98 It is still classified as version 1.0.

datajake1999,

@luiscarlosgonzalez I didn't develop it, and I don't know who did. All I know is they want to stay anonymous.

datajake1999,

@bermudianbrit Not sure on that one, as I haven't extensively tested this addon.

For some reason, I find it amusing that the Sendero GPS audio tutorials start and end with sounds from an extremely hard to find Chat program from Microsoft (specifically MSN Chat 4.0.

For years, I have had a collection of Windows Sounds from the blind-geek-zone, which was archived by the Wayback Machine at https://web.archive.org/web/20100916094931/http://blind-geek-zone.net/Data/VariousOldWindowsSoundSchemes.zip. Does anyone know where the chat* files in the Windows 98 and Windows ME folders originated from? These don't appear to be included with default installs of those operating systems.

Needed to run a couple of quick commands over SSH from my phone. I wanted to copy the input for one of them from another app. But each time I backgrounded the SSH client, it disconnected from the server. When I reconnected, VoiceOver's edit rotor was empty of options; no paste. I went back to the original app to try again, at which point VoiceOver decided to simply stop allowing me to read forwards by character within text fields (which it's still doing as I write this). In the end, I memorised it and typed it out by hand. The entire exercise took about 10 minutes instead of the 20 seconds it would've on Windows, and I'm so happy to have this computer in my pocket that is mediocre at everything.

datajake1999,

@jpellis2008 @jscholes My phone isn't my primary computing device for this exact reason. I only use my phone for calls, text, and ordering food. I use my computer for everything else.

Hey everyone! I've got some very good news! So did you guys think that the natural voices would be exclusive to narrator? Did you guys think the natural voices wouldn't even make it to other screen readers? Well, you all thought wrong! Because guess what? Thanks to a video on YouTube, I found out there is an NVDA addon for these voices! And it even works on windows 10! You can get this addon at datajake.braillescreen.net, TTS, synthesizers for NVDA, and titled neural voices. The rest of you guys can thank me later! Feel free to boost this post! It deserves one!

datajake1999,

@DavidGoldfield @mckensie I am not sure of the legality of this. As for who created this, the author wants to remain anonymous.

@datajake1999 I've found this page on the wayback Machine that linked to a lot of Artic Technologies downloads, including demos of WinVision. It appears that a lot of the files it links to were also archived.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 This is going to be fun, I will definitely have a look at this later.

Curious, does anyone happen to have an old math flash installer or CD from before 2005? It appears older versions of some APH software used WAV files that were ACM compressed, and I would like to have these files with their proper timestamps for the Unofficial APH sound library that I put together.

datajake1999,

@sparksexist They had a bit of high frequency sparkle, at least to my ears.

For those who don't know, Inform is a language that is used to write ZMachine compatible interactive fiction games.
Apparently, the Inform 6.21 command line compiler was ported to Windows CE, and compiled for ARM. Anyone who knows me probably knows where this is going.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 You are correct. I could theoretically develop and test a text adventure game on a BraileNote. To my knowledge, no one has ever done this.

datajake1999,

@we_are_spc Imagine the possibility of developing and testing a text adventure game on a BrailleNote.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 I haven't actually developed any IF games, however that is something I want to do at some point in my lifetime.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 Got it. I know of someone who developed a ZCode game and shared it with the BrailleNote list many years ago. From what I heard, it was buggy, and possibly unfinished if I remember correctly.

The first time I was exposed to DECtalk was in a Sendero GPS audio tutorial demonstrating how to download maps from the Sendero website. If you want to listen to this, it can be found at https://senderogroup.com/mp3/tutorial/3downloading.mp3.
After I listened to this for the first time, I was curious about that mysterious speech synthesizer, and I wanted to use it with JAWS if I ever got it on my computer. Little did I know that I would obtain the synthesizer's source code over 10 years later.

datajake1999,

@FluidEscence He is Chris Nova now.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 Interesting. I am curious what that monotone speech sounds like.

datajake1999,

@FluidEscence Yes. He changed his last name when he got married to Kim Loftis, who is now Kim Nova. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Chris was married, according to evidence found in old Blind Cool Tech podcasts.

datajake1999,

@KaraLG84 That is some ruff concatenation.

20 years ago, the final version of Sonic Zoom was released.

datajake1999,

@remixman @jaybird110127 I get what you did there.
