New paranoia:

We had a car drive itself into a tree. On its own. It isn't even an electric. Though I guess it wanted to be?

The fucking starter shorted out somehow, and the STARTER DROVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE. DESPITE THE PARKING BRAKE BEING ON.

I've never even heard of this failure mode. WTF.

@glassbottommeg
Was this an automatic transmission?

I remember when, learning to drive stick, people were like "if you're ever stalled on train tracks and the engine won't start, you can use the starter motor to move off the tracks."

Sounds a bit like that situation, except without the user input!

And I wonder if your model of car only applies parking brakes on rear wheels, while drive is on front wheels?

Definitely scary, in any case! Glad you're okay!

@glassbottommeg
Whoa! So even with the clutch out, it engaged the wheels?

I probably would've jumped out of the car at that point 😅

I can't believe this story just keeps getting weirder!

The artist we're working with on some sprites suggested we try adding shadows near walls to help distinguish them spatially.

So we're experimenting with an ambient occlusion (shadows in corners) shader in Ostranauts!

This pair of images shows the effect on vs. off.

Screenshot of the Testudo Dream ship interior in Ostranauts, with no ambient occlusion (as the game renders it now).

@nyrath As per standard 80s sci fi set design, all decks are metal grills, for easier clean up :P

Carmakers must bring back buttons to get good safety scores in Europe

In 2026, Euro NCAP points will be deducted if some controls aren't physical.

IBM has made a new, highly efficient AI processor

A very unusual chip design provides a distinct approach to cutting AI's energy cost.

@arstechnica the math coprocessor is back, baby!

trezzer, to forzamotorsport

Forza Motorsport seems to have some settings bug on Windows. If I've had settings set to high or higher and turn them back down, performance never goes back up. Initial benchmark ran at a healthy 60-70 fps. Now, there's nothing I can do to get it over 24 fps - neither with full manual "low" across the entire board, nor with reset to default settings. Guess a future patch will solve it.

dcfedor,
@dcfedor@mastodon.social avatar

@trezzer I think I ran into this, too. Restarting the game seems to be required between settings changes to get accurate fps changes.

@trezzer now that you mention it, yeah, the interstitial scenes do get chuggy here, too.

But yeah, as long as it's smoother behind the wheel, that's what counts!

Hey Folks!

My name's Daniel Fedor, but I go by dcfedor on most channels. I'm the founder of Blue Bottle Games, LLC, and the main developer on:

Ostranauts - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1022980/Ostranauts/
NEO Scavenger - https://store.steampowered.com/app/248860/NEO_Scavenger/

Prior to that, I did mostly tech art at BioWare during the Dragon Age: Origins, DA2, and ME3 times.

Here for the niche, low-stress and sci-fi posts and banter.
