And then after my activations I realised I wasn’t that far from my favourite bakery (Bourkies in Woodend). Not too late for a pie and jelly slice where they use cheesecake instead of gelatin

I'm just a humble country chicken admin, but I've been thinking a lot about the cost of the fediverse and how we can improve it for all of the instances... in a coop kind of way

The cost of handing all of the media is THE major problem for me atm.

https://shlee.fedipress.au/2024/call-to-action-fediverse-media-server/

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@shlee in the absence of a better solution, could it be worth building your own object storage server running MinIO or similar? You can get refurb/recertified HDDs in bulk for around $19-$21/TB (14TB for $260 - 18TB for $380 - 22TB for $580 depending how dense you wanna go).

That said, there really should be a better way than downloading everything on Fedi everytime!

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@shlee ahhh, bandwidth - the eternal austrailan internet problem. If you were hosted in the US you'd get a 10gig pipe for a flat rate with unlimited data :(

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@shlee I was investigating something similar that needed a shitload of bandwidth but hosted in AU and one workaround was to simply limit your connectivity to the various internet exchanges. They’ll offer you 1gig-100gig for a reasonable flat fee, but the catch is it’s only to other networks they peer with, which means Telstra customers are shit out of luck as they’re the only ISP here that doesn’t peer. Could be something worth looking into there so you can route your traffic via the exchanges for cheap and save the “premium” bandwidth for Telstra/non-peers.

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@shlee yep, would be nice if they were more fine-grained with their bandwidth pricing!

    @jonathantrott it isn't silent - you can hear it do its thing if you're in a dead quiet room, but I wouldn't call it noisy.

    decryption,
    @decryption@aus.social avatar

    @jonathantrott the WD 20TB Red specs say 20/32 dba (idle/seek), the Seagate X20 specs say 28/32 dba, noisier when idle, same when seeking - so if you want something less noisy this isn't the drive you want

    Galax GTX1650 Super 4GB GPU - $235

    Used this card for ages for some gaming and mostly GPU video encoding. Good for lower spec PSUs as it only needs a single power plug.

    Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones - $200

    Mostly just wanted to see how these sound and they are awesome. Comfortable and sound great, but I'm not a headphone guy, I prefer listening on my fancy speakers. Can provide receipt from Massdrop for this one if you have any troubles.

    Rode Podcaster USB microphone - $100

    Had this for over a decade, still works perfectly. Aussie made! Missing the stand mount (Rode RM2) hence the cheaper price. Includes the USB cable too.

    @timixretroplays it's a dynamic mic, so does need to be pretty close - i wouldn't want to use it more than 10cm away from the source of sound

    Not using now that I have a field recorder that can also act as a USB interface, can provide the original receipt for this, only a few months old.

    Issue 2095 of The Sizzle just left my mail server!

    Today's headlines:

    • Google's AI answer bot is very dumb, laughable actually

    • iFixit cracks the shits with Samsung and Spotify's 2-yo Car Thing is already e-waste

    • The Daylight DC-1 is an e-ink style tablet that'll do 60-120fps

    • Banning kids under 16 from social media is a dumb idea and people smarter than me agree

    And the following stuff is on sale thanks to OzBargain:

    • Cheap Lebara SIM, PlayStation Plus, Moto G54 phone, Samsung 256GB microSD
