got a pixel 8a - too cheap not to!

  • RRP is $849

  • JB is running a promo where you get $300 off the 8a if you trade in any smartphone, so I gave them a Samsung Note 10 with a cracked screen for $1, bringing the price down to $548

  • if you make a new JB Hi-Fi perks account you get a $10 off coupon, $538

  • I paid the $538 with a gift card I got at 5% off making my out of pocket cost $511.55

  • plus JB give you a $200 gift card if you buy an 8A during its first 2 weeks of sale, which I'll happily use on more ink for my Epson ET-8550, or a new lens for my camera, making the effective price $311.55 for a brand new phone that has support for 7 years ($45/yr if the battery makes it that long!)

I love bargains ๐Ÿ’ธ

any of you nerds seen an ESP-based relay board that'll handle 24V AC and also take input from a physical switch?

tell me again how toyota not going 100% into EVs is a mistake - they're selling more cars then ever! I love EVs, have been driving one for 5 years, but EVs are not the answer for a large portion of motorists yet and hybrid/ICE engines have a long life ahead of them (20+ years imho)

lets say i wanted to use something that isn't a smartphone for TOTP purposes - what's out there? something stand alone, probably not internet connected or reliant on a business providing updates to keep it working, and that I can have multiple copies of

oh cool, the first data from the National Audit of Mobile Coverage (first time govt has independently tried to map mobile coverage in Australia instead of relying on the telcos to self-report) is now live

Any solutions for using a smartphone permanently plugged in without destroying the battery? e.g for use as a security camera, or a display

turning Melton's High Street into a pedestrian mall with medium density housing would be so awesome

Signed up for superloop to replace aussie broadband (ABB are fine but superloop is way cheaper) and instead of adding their service on the 2nd data port on my NTD they took over the 1st port and cancelled my Aussie service.

Also fine, saves me having to cancel it with Aussie - but I had a static IP and a bunch of servers with firewalls to only allow SSH from my (now gone) static IP address. Oops. Lots of console work for me.

also eSIMs are a mistake for your primary phone number - making your phone number beholden to an app?? bad idea, good for burner/travel numbers though

i was curious as to how they get the kwh figure on the energy star labels on appliances, found that they use AS/NZS 2442.2:2000, so looked on Standards Australia's Reading Room and itโ€™s not on there :(

I'm not paying $161

Who is out there microwaving their meat pies? Sure, itโ€™s hot in 5 min, but youโ€™ve got horrible mushy pastry and a soggy bottom.

Went to Sunbury to pickup a Pixel 5 and the owner didnโ€™t even bother to reset it and remove the phone from their Google account. Ended up being a 1hr process because they had no idea what their Google password is and had to ask a relative. They arenโ€™t even that old, younger than me yet had no concept that giving me their phone full of data is a Bad Idea.
