I miss my Dad and his brothers so much, and am so grateful for their service to protect generations that came before them and after them.

@cfmccarthy They sound like wonderful people and this country was lucky to have them. May their memories be a blessing.

Our grass is turning its usual gold for summer. This hill was burned in the 2020 wildfire, one we had to evacuate from. For people not from here, this is why you see charcoal marks in my landscapes at times.

@rolandelli I’ve been thankful for the duration of the rolling green foothills this year and every day I am sorry to see them fade so fast and turn gold. I hope this beautiful artwork is therapeutic for you. May this year’s rains ward off wildfires.

The California origin of "A to Z Bread"

In which I obsessively trace the history and authorship of the A to Z bread recipe

@dys_morphia I recall A to Z bread being served in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Pleasant Hill to be specific in the 70s & 80s, it was on the printed weekly menus. Always wondered why it was called that and why few others had heard of it.

@riogreyhound @taylorlorenz Same (well comfy Breatheteq KN95) but my elderly parents I live with don’t :( So I got it at home for first time in Feb. Still have symptoms, hoping they don’t bring it home again. :(

@JMMaok @ai6yr @JMMaok @ai6yr Baba can mean father, grandfather, respected elder in many languages. The halal sign could indicate mediterranean food.

@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@JMMaok @ai6yr Also Al is sometimes spelled El if it is Arabic.

@ai6yr @JMMaok Something for everyone. My fav place for actual fresh falafel is a place in Lafayette CA called Kabob Burger. Lol. Hawawshi on the menu there is Egyptian…

@ai6yr @JMMaok I am wondering about the difference between Tarb & Kofta…

deewani,

@ai6yr @JMMaok Now I am also wondering about the origin of the name Ali Baba but dinner calls …

Safety note: do not accidentally stab yourself with a steak knife reaching for something else in the dish rack, LOL. It's painful, even if you don't break the skin. If it looks like I was in a knife fight, it was just with myself 😂

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Ouch! The number of times I used to turn the knives around after being stabbed by them … printed the page of the dishwasher manual that says knife blades face down for the family!! But alas, they were only trained when I became a soup nazi - No cooking for anyone if I cut my fingers b/c of them, lol. Worked great. Same rule applies to dishes left in sink.

ai6yr, to tea

My preferred cheap black tea. Oddly, only found at local Indian markets, and produced here by Unilever Canada.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr During shelter in place I found out some Walmarts carry it too and I was able to order curbside for my mom. It’s her favorite too.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah. Seen it at some Safeways and either FoodMaxx or Food 4 Less too. Probably depends on local demographics.

@andybrwn This makes me remember the Walnut Creek Eichler homes because of the Golden State Killer (EAR-ONS) serial killer. It is said he was perhaps attracted by their design: not much visible in front, all glass house in the back. He also hit architect Mike Corbett’s Village Homes planned community in Davis, CA. Housing so famous ex French President Mitterrand visited them. I wonder if any of those Sacramento homes housed his victims.

The good news is that @trishgreenhalgh, and many others wrote a great piece that highlights masks work. The bad news is that the laws of physics still work everywhere else too, especially those involving bicycles and immovable objects.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@masknerd I hope you are able to recover at home soon. Sorry this happened to you. Thanks for all your work. And especially that Breatheteq mask recommendation. Surely am appreciating it more in the heat.

Hmm, finding a vegetarian Indian dish to make for dinner from scratch (which doesn't require a lot of ingredients I don't have and time) is an interesting challenge 🤔

Thus, why Indian restaurants and grocery stores here with takeout counters are appealing, LOL.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr You could always bring it to a boil on the stove without a lid to boil off the water so it is thicker. Also, mashing some of the chickpeas with a spoon against the side of the pot helps thicken it. I never tried instant pot methods so I can’t comment there.
