@ebassi@mastodon.social

Geek, husband, lover, software developer, Londoner. Not necessarily in that order.

he/him

Proud #GTK and #GNOME dev; member of the GNOME Foundation.

You may remember me for my work at OpenedHand, Intel, Endless, and the GNOME Foundation. Otherwise, you heard about me being a scary person on the Internet.

Opinions are always my own, but if you don't like them that's too bad.

I can't believe it: after 7 years, the System Shock remake is finally out

Every time I got a Kickstarter notification from Nightdive, the first thing I did was reading the amount of salt in the comments. It was glorious. I don't know what I will do, now that the thing is done and available to people.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

Don't know you, but when I spend a hundred bucks on crowdfunding a project, I make damn well sure to stay on top of any request or additional locations from the project's creators. I really don't get it when people sink money into something and then just… don't know where to get things like download codes, or extras, or filling out details for physical deliveries? And then complain that didn't know? Gamers are weird, man…

The reason why I look forward to more Rust use in the GNOME project is that I'm intrigued by the possibilities that would be available by combining the drama of these two communities

GNOME doesn't even have a shadowy cabal chat any more!

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

Shitposting aside, I'd actually like it if we end up getting some more accountability and proper processes at various levels, instead of people having to improvise

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@vathpela I'm finally out of the loop enough that I don't even get invited to new cabals any more. End of an era.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesh the fact that it was used mostly for random chats that had nothing to do with gnome was the genius bit

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@raf GNOME is the project that usually gets knee jerk reactionary forks, it would feel odd to adopt one…

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesh these days the meme is that the GNOME release team is an all-powerful cabal of people secretly steering the project from the shadows, by replacing components and maintainers, which is funny to me personally because we can't even get people to commit code that builds…

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@jadahl @jamesh no, the meme existed long before that; it dates back to before GNOME 3.0 was announced; that’s just the latest iteration of the same

In which I explain what desktop developers, distributions, and users can do to configure sandbox portals

The haul from London Comic Com. I had to tap up the Bandai Namco
stand.

@Gazimoff Oh, gunplas are back at MCM? I went last year and there was nothing, not even at the Bandai stand 😅

@whynothugo I don't know if you're aware, but just in case: Soho is the main LGBT entertainment area in London. There are plenty of gay bars, there, so it's entirely expected to have a 90% of male customers in certain establishments.

My employer got me a new laptop. It's got Ubuntu Pro with Gnome desktop and it's enrolled in Landscape. It also has an extra Nvidia gpu for which they only configured Nouveau.

Coming from 8 years on Manjaro and the Cinnamon desktop I thought it would be an interesting experience.

I'm only a couple of hours in, but right now I am just hoping it will get better as and when I get things tweaked enough.

But for sure, I won't be using any for my own devices! Yuck...

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@fschaap The applications grid shows all the applications that provide a desktop file, and that are marked as visible. What other applications are installed on your system?

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@fschaap Firefox is likely installed as a Snap, not as a Debian package; and if the icon is on the dash/dock, then it won't be in the applications grid. The dash/dock is a list of "favourites" and it's always visible, so there's no point in duplicating entries.

Disclaimer: I don't use Ubuntu, so I'm not entirely sure about all the changes they make to the desktop.

hergertme, to random

While the rest of the world goes AI/ML, I'd really like to just focus on getting OS fundamentals right. There is so much low hanging fruit to fix in operating systems to be distracted by chasing phantoms.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@hergertme @JCWasmx86 but don’t you know that GPUs are for eye candy only, and you don’t need them to render a terminal?

I might have put a bit much habanero at my chili 🤣

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@sima on Sunday, I put a bit too much habanero powder in the marinade for shrimp tacos; ended up using a lot of sour cream to offset that particular miscalculation 😅

Last night, I landed on Minmus, and tonight did a Mun approach. Didn't have enough delta V to attempt a landing, so I pulled an Apollo 8 and just waved at the craters.

ebassi,
@ebassi@mastodon.social avatar

@benjaminhollon I'm running in Science mode and unlocking the tech tree as I go along, so I'm happy to build enough science points from experiments in orbit. The little excursion got me about 150 points, same as landing on Minmus.

These kinds of little details and putting love into every corner of the experience are what makes working on @elementary OS so rewarding for me. Also, welcome back to Marius!

@ted @danirabbit there's a D-Bus proxy that limits the view of the session bus; by default, only org.freedesktop.portal.* names are exported by default, so people can talk to the portals. Everything else has to be explicitly added to the manifest: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/sandbox-permissions.html#d-bus-access
