Game devs: how do you manage merge conflicts in your projects? A colleague and I were both independently working on the same Godot project, stored in Git, and so we inevitably had a merge conflict when we each modified the same scene. The scene format is plain text so after a bit of trial & error I resolved the conflict. Are there better tools for this in industry? Or is the tool “don't edit scene X, I'm working on it”?

GNOME will be mentoring 8 new contributors for Google Summer of Code 2024

We are happy to announce that GNOME was assigned eight slots for Google Summer of Code projects this year!

GSoC is a program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development. A number of long term GNOME developers are former GSoC interns, making the program a very valuable entry point for new members in our project.

In 2024 we will mentoring the following projects:

Project Title Contributor Assigned Mentor(s)
Add TypeScript Support to Workbench Angelo Verlain Shema Sonny Piers
Port Workbench demos to Vala, build a new Workbench Library, and replace the current code search Bharat Tyagi Sonny Piers
Improve Tracker SPARQL developer experience by creating a “web IDE” for developing queries Demigod Carlos Garnacho
Papers’ small screen and touch support for mobile and tablet Markus Göllnitz Pablo Correa Gomez
More durable synching for FlatSync Mattia Formichetti Rasmus Thomsen
Port libipuz to Rust pranjal_ jrb
Improve Tracker SPARQL developer experience by creating “web IDE” for developing queries rachle08 Carlos Garnacho
Add support for the latest GIR attributes and gi-docgen formatting to Valadoc sudhanshuv1 Lorenz Wildberg

As part of the contributor’s acceptance into GSoC they are expected to actively participate in the Community Bonding period (May 1 – 26). The Community Bonding period is intended to help prepare contributors to start contributing at full speed starting May 27.

The new contributors will soon get their blogs added to Planet GNOME making it easy for the GNOME community to get to know them and the projects that they will be working on.

We would like to also thank our mentors for supporting GSoC and helping new contributors enter our project.

If you have any doubts, feel free to reply to this Discourse topic or message us privately at soc-admins@gnome.org

Isn't it interesting that every killing by every cop is just a single bad apple that should never be thought to spoil the bunch, while every protest by and on behalf of marginalized people must be flawlessly perfect, or all participants deserve the brutality the police exist to deliver to them?

:fedora: Congratulations to the entire @fedora community on the release of F40!

And this is awesome: The "Slimbook Fedora 2" laptop looks like a great way to get more people up and running with and best of all, they donate 3% of the proceeds to @gnome.

In retrospect, we should have figured out that Jia Tan was a plant from the fact that they showed up to do releases. In 20+ years of contributions to FLOSS projects I haven't found anybody willing to do the same.

so what you're saying is that OSS development needs more violence

I keep brooding on the way the xz backdoor was enabled in significant part via weaponizing the FOSS culture of shitty behavior and abuse.

Yes, there're other pathologies at work here (the big tech capitalist pillaging of the commons, etc).

But what is striking is that the uncool, mean standards of FOSS conduct that many of us have decried for years, & that many defended as authentic, tough, etc., ended up not just being exclusionary loser behavior, but a significant attack surface.

zarfeblong, to random
@zarfeblong@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I guess the takeaway from the xz backdoor situation is:

If you’re an open-source project maintainer, and somebody starts getting on your case for not doing enough free work for them, you reply “big Jia Tan energy there” and then block them forever.
