A5 @genchat Of course, specific laws vary by country, but I wouldn't be surprised that many are similar.

@genchat @genchat and linguistics research shows that migration has been a feature of human existence for a long time. Some 'nations' are of course exist largely as a consequence.

@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat I highly recommend 'By faith alone : one family's epic journey through 400 years of American Protestantism'
by Bill Griffeth. In fact the whole series by Bill Griffeth, as he covers US migration from Europe and the aspects too. It's a great resource if you are not directly concerned with US .

@RobertJackson58585858 @genchat @genchat I have a pair of cousins who both emigrated with their families from / to via in 1830 and 1846. Both groups travelled on the same named ship - The Courier, but it appears the two ships were actually different vessels. The cost and logistics of the journey seem to have been quite an achievement at this distance.

A3a #genchat @genchat Some examples from last night were: pages of the censuses (showing neighbors who they may have known in the old country), newspapers, letters, family stories, naturalization records

@genchat @genchat on newspapers, I only recently discovered the free NYShistoricnewspapers site which complements some of the commercial newspaper sites. Quite a treasure trove as often reports are copied or syndicated from one title to another. #NewYork #newspapers #genchat

One more thought on I'm a fan of as it handles genealogy facts, information and context as just that, without being constrained to immediately attach them to a family. Something that most genealogy programs don't allow you to do. It is also good for broader historical research too. It's free and you can get it here https://clsturgeon.github.io/MemoryKeeper/ @geneadons @genealogy @clsturgeon @genchat

@genchat You can imports a Gedcom and add all that 'fluffy stuff" that doesn't quite fit anywhere yet!

Jan mentioned other resources to find FANs as well: city directories, property viewers, obituaries @genchat

@genchat @genchat up to about the mid 20th century if newspapers reported a funeral they often listed all the mourners and if you are lucky with their relationship to the departed and where they were living.

@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

Perhaps for obvious reasons, as family historian, families are reluctant to have funeral / wake photographs. However I have found it can sometimes work (sensitively) and everyone seems happy to participate. Anyone else been there? @genchat

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat that's a treasure, for sure!

@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat What I like about FAN clubs is the water has not been muddied by the genealogy companies (yet). So you do have to do your own work! Proper genealogy!

Q4 How do research plans tie in with each part of the Genealogical Proof Standard? @genchat

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @RobertJackson58585858 @genchat Never forgetting the negative evidence, of course.

Q3 What should be incorporated in the plan? @genchat

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat what specific tools (software) do people use for research plans - mind maps, structured notetaking apps maybe?

ICEBREAKER Have you ever used a research plan? @genchat

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat Is there a difference between a Research Plan and a Research Log? Yes, I have a research log that I keep adding to with open questions and to-dos.

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat So, a 'plan' might be "to explore the in-laws of a couple to establish where the couple might have met"?

I am thinking of getting the Family Historian program. does anyone have experience with it? Do you like it?
Thanks!

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@sheribush I have used for many years and have used others before. I've even looked elsewhere more recently but in my opinion you probably cannot better it. Three things I like 1. Your data is held in Gedcom format so it's easy to access (and move if you wanted to). 2. Has a great independent user group with a forum https://www.fhug.org.uk/ 3. Software has a good range of plugins that are easy to use and add some really helpful tools. @genealogy

Wondering what to do when ends support? You don't need a new PC. Try Linux Mint. You can even start on a USB stick (8GB minimum). There's a how-to here https://itsfoss.com/linux-mint-live-usb/ When you are happy you can install it on your current PC.

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

Linux Mint - which flavour to choose? Cinnamon vs MATE vs Xfce. Simple, if your coming from Windows 10 Cinnamon will look and feel familiar. If you have an older pc or are short on RAM go for the Xfce version.

So let's talk: what do you write - blogs, books, blurbs? What inspires you? How do you get motivated? Any cool tools? @genchat

edintone,
@edintone@mastodon.green avatar

@genchat @genchat I use for writing as it enables you to organise your research. I keep a running list of ideas and as I build the content the next one goes to press. The best thing is that writing often prompts further research as you soon discover 'holes' in your narrative.
