I love the fact that when people referring to distros hear “it just works out of the box” the first thing they think of is . Say what you will, but this is a huge win for Linux as a whole, because that’s how you bring people over to our side.

I finally got around to installing Linux Mint on the old 2016 HP laptop that was my son's when he was 12 (he's now 20). It runs beautifully. My first time using Linux Mint and it is beautiful. This is my first step in abandoning Windows--so far, I can say it won't be missed.

Spent the day installing to an old Acer of my sister in law's brother (I've converted everyone to in the family). Acer's firmware was very buggy, so it took tricks to load grub.

Installed them a few apps, and they will be super happy with their new (old) laptop. Previously, 10 was dying on that laptop, it was that slow, as it was swapping furiously! Mint loaded in about 1 minute, which is good (considering the very slow hdd).

I'm not a "Linux Guy" really but I started re-evaluating it lately, and I think it might not just be for the Tech Weirdos anymore. It can absolutely be a daily driver for a lot of game developers now!

Matrix certrainly has its rough edges, but I find it awesome that pretty much every major Linux community now has their dedicated space. All federated, of course.

I jumped ship and hopped over to the Linux Mint crowd. I used Pop_OS for ~3 months and it was an overall good experience on my ThinkPad X1 Gen 8.

But I always liked the Cinnamon desktop as I have used Mint for over a year before. And I didn't want to be part of the Rust-based re-invented desktop experience (COSMIC) driven by a company. Ultimately I believe that Linux is and should continue to be a community effort. Also, there were some minor annoyances (like the Pop_OS store eating up 1.2 GB of RAM all the time even when it is not running, an issue System76 is aware of for quite a while). And also, Snap.

If feels good to be back to a trusted distro whose maintainers generally make the right decisions (i.e. removing Snap).

Let's see how long it will last ;-)

xkcd 386.

Linux Mint monthly news suggests that "6 million people" have installed the (unverified) Google Chrome flatpak from Flathub.

No, the number is nearer 200K.

Don't confuse "installs" with "devices". It's around 200K devices (which typically will be people) and 6 million downloads of software updates or clean installs.

All very good numbers, but not the same thing. By an order of magnitude. Super (intentionally?) misleading.

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4675

A graph showing downloads of the chrome snap. When a new release goes out (or the package is rebuilt for some reason) there's a peak of 100K downloads in one day, some more the next day and so-on over a week or so. That amounts to about 200K or so (roughly)
A screenshot from Flathub suggesting 6 million "installs" of Chrome. It should probably say "6 million downloads of the package, which are often the same machine downloading updates, it's not 6 million people" but that probably wouldn't fit.
