What are people's preferred tools for virtual environment management these days? I specifically care about being able to have hundreds of different project folders each with their own environment

I've been using pipenv for years despite not using Pipfiles - what else should I be considering in 2024?

I want a maximum of one command (equivalent to "pipenv shell") that I have to run in a directory in order to activate the corresponding environment

@simon I think direnv would be good for this for you AND other side benefits like env loading/unloading in general. I don’t automatically activate mine but it’s easy to do.

@webology @simeon THIS! Took me 5 minutes to move to uv. If the VCs force some strange move (as I can’t see Charlie doing it on his own) I can similarly move to vu if the time comes.

Side note I would love if this ever happens for the fork to be named fu. Cracking up just thinking about it. 🤣

@simeon it’s real! But it’s not cobblestone path, just a rock wall around our fire pit. And the “Forrest” is actually just a couple of trees and then a road. We are about a mile from a more “real Forrest”

Pineapple was on sale AND I’m making central/South American food today so needed a dessert to go with it. No pineapple was wasted in the making of these yummy food items today. The tops now decorate the counter.

My fellow devs, I need your opinion:

Say, you have a software project. To do some operations more quickly, you write helper scripts. Think build.sh, download_dependencies.py, whatever. You may use them yourself or in CI.

What is your directory name of choice for these scripts?
