My wife is vegetarian and I often opt to cook rather than take out because eating out anywhere can be difficult due to the lack of vegetarian accommodations, I imagine that goes doubly so for vegan.

I just wanted to say that your struggle is real and valid and I hope things improve.

This is a step in the right direction. Seems like great work.

We should also pressure our Congressional Representatives.

With how climate change has been accelerating lately, I wish I shared your optimism.

Just dropping in to say your skin looks great.

The insane part is that college has a good chance to have no effect on your overall earning potential. Polymatter did an excellent video on it recently.

Sadly all too common, one of my friends has a master’s of structural engineering and he drives an Uber for a living

My area in particular gets a lot of housing market “investment”.

The going rate for a one bedroom is $1400 a month or $460,000 for a single family home in the suburbs with no access to public transport.

It’s rough out here.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

It does get that high $1400 are basements in tare down neighborhoods

franklin, (edited )
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it’s an inelastic demand.

Our zoning codes, car centric infrastructure, and investment firms having control over supply have priced an entire generation out of a human right.

I wasn’t trying to build a statistically significant argument, just giving my anecdotal woes of the local economy.

However median income for my area is $62,000. Rent range is $1400 - $3000 I gave the low end. Average is about $2,300. Hopefully that gives context.

I wish it was possible, a citizen’s co-op sounds amazing.

I will say I’ve seen it tried with varying degrees of success so It’d have to done carefully.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

A $1 million median is insane, even going by median cost of ownership in my area for a fairly standard single family home is $550,000, you could get away for $450,000 on the low end though.

I guess it can always get worse. The part that strikes me is that I live in an area that is fairly low density and was previously known for its home affordability. So I would say you’re right, that plus investment firms buying up a lot of the available housing. Not to mention the additional cost that car centric infrastructure lays on the individual.

I really hope things improve but I won’t hold my breath.

This isn’t about a difference in political opinion it’s about encouraging not voting.

You can choose non-participation and you can fool yourself that it washes your hands but it does not stop the status quo, in fact it encourages it.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

Which option on the ballot is that?

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

So instead of suggesting that you interact with the political apparatus at the Congressional level and actually take some action your solution is too just to do nothing?

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

Just not to vote evidently.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

My apologies you’re right I extrapolated your intent when I shouldn’t have.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure what this is supposed to imply

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve found most people here are fairly respectful honestly. Not always but way better than most online spaces.

@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

You have every right to your opinion.

Just for others who are on the fence, let’s illustrate this via the trolley problem.

There are 4 people who would die without you interacting with the trolley, 2 people die if you switch tracks.

Does choosing to interact with the system at all make you complicit in the death of those 2 individuals? By choosing not to change it are you complicit in the 4 individuals?

I would argue, since you have been given the power to choose even in an unjust system, you must do all you can to minimize harm.

Of course the system should be changed but the trolley will advance with or without your input.

I found this interesting book on this very subject and I think I will be purchasing it in order to explore their arguments.

You’re analogy missed the part where they can operate without you and Infact the madder scientist wishes you to do nothing. It’s why Republicans work so hard in red States to add roadblocks to voters.

You can act on the cage while minimizing harm. Not voting doesn’t work, never has, never will.

You can choose non-participation and you can fool yourself that it washes your hands but it does not stop the status quo, in fact it encourages it.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

That’s just incorrect and I point to 2016 as the perfect case study for how low voter turn out not motivating policy change.

I empathize that what is happening in Palestine is unforgivable however you’re cutting off your nose to spite your face.

If Trump acts as he promises to and accelerates climate change even further, there won’t be a hill left to die on.

franklin,
@franklin@lemmy.world avatar

I’m pretty sure everyone in my circles blamed the rampant obvious disinformation campaign that the public was ill educated to parse and see through.

He’s only terrible because he has to contend with a Congress that does not allow him to act which is why you need to appeal to Congress.

What you are choosing will kill everyone.
