Last year, I got a cake to celebrate the FreeDOS 28th anniversary.

A cake was a lot.

So this year, we celebrated with cupcakes, decorated with "2" and "9" 😀

When I recorded the anniversary video about writing your own versions of the DOS commands, I didn't have time for one more program.

I've recorded a bonus on Patreon showing how to write our own simple version of the MORE command.

This makes a few assumptions to simplify the program, but you can always expand the program to make it your own.

In 1994, several of us got together around a pretty neat idea.

We liked DOS, but Microsoft was clearly moving completely to Windows. "The next version of Windows," they said, "would do away with DOS."

We wanted to keep DOS around, so we decided to write our own. That project, announced 29 years ago TODAY on June 29 1994, was the FreeDOS Project.

Thanks to EVERYONE who has been part of FreeDOS! 29 years is a long time for any open source project, and I'm looking forward to more years to come.

It's just two days until the 29th anniversary of FreeDOS! (June 29, 1994)

Are you doing anything special to celebrate?

I'm going to do a few videos about FORTRAN 77 programming. It won't be a video "series" but I'll sprinkle these videos in the weekly videos, so you'll see them from time to time.

Gregory Pietsch has released version 0.5 of his libm library.

Libm is a public domain math library that provides solid support for math functions.

EtherDFS is an 'installable filesystem' TSR for DOS. It maps a drive from a remote computer (typically Linux-based) to a local drive letter

Mateusz Viste published a new version of EtherDFS, this is a bug fix release

Remember when I asked "should I do a video series to teach you FORTRAN 77 programming' and you said "yes"?

I've recorded the first video! It will go live on Friday. 😃

This video is about columns and character sets. Hint: it's based on punched cards.

New video tomorrow! It's not a FreeDOS video, but about how I learned nroff to write class papers as an undergrad, when I installed in 1993 and there wasn't a Linux word processor yet.

Richard also released his GO utility to find files or directories. "GO uses my DOS windowing library to present the file and diretories that are found, and the up and down arrow keys are used to move through the list."

MIT license at GO's GitHub page:

Richard Hulse has released a DOS windowing library as open source software.

"The library creates a screen buffer and text windows can be created, layered and moved around."

The library is written in assembly, and released as open source under the MIT license. Thanks Richard!

It's not FreeDOS, but I wanted to share a new article based website I've set up:

Technically We Write
https://technicallywewrite.com/

If you write (and we all do: documentation, how-tos, .. you don't have to be a "tech writer" to write) we'd love to share your story on TWW.
