How do you think sports betting has affected your and others' engagement with CFB?

Was lurking a bit at the old place, and there was a thread asking who had never bet on CFB*, but the discussion went more into how legalized sports betting has affected fansā€™ engagement with college football. I am in a weird place, as I canā€™t come up with a lot of good reasons to specifically ban it when so many other forms...

I donā€™t gamble, Iā€™m not good enoughā€¦ yetā€¦ But seriously, I donā€™t think itā€™s changed my view on the sport as a whole. I donā€™t mind gambling and on reddit I would periodically engage on the faux gambling poll. I donā€™t think itā€™s bad, but Iā€™m not sure that Iā€™d want to invest the time to do any better than predict the over/under on a few big vols games each year. But what I do hate about gambling is how unbearably present it is in sports media now. Like I get it, some of us are allowed to gamble. But holy shit I donā€™t need the chyron giving me the odds on the game of the week 24/7. This is part of my greater sports media as a whole but especially college media has received some serious downgrades over the years thing, but I really do think the lines seem to be more prevalent than the scores sometimes.

You should do this anyway, honestly increases the quality of the broadcasts at least an order of magnitude. Bob Kesling isnā€™t even that great compared to the legend John Ward, but heā€™s miles better than the ESPN/CBS ā€œAā€ teams that will only talk about the playoff and bama/tOSU and lightyears ahead of the B squads over on SECN.

Yeah I donā€™t think the ACC is actually collapsing any time soon, but with FSU and clempson showing signs of discontent, I think it certainly means itā€™s closer than the ACC wants it to be.

I guess I should clarify that my continued hatred of the cfp doesnā€™t actually come from the cfp being a silly championship model for cfb (it is but thatā€™s another rant) rather it comes from espnā€™s handling of the postseason. The way they poison other bowl games and many late season games for non cfp contenders. Yeah the vandy - Tenn game is not normally particularly sexy or important in the nc conversation, but some weirdos still love that game. And the single entity that has the most power to promote (and profit from) those games continues to devalue the product in favor a silly little end of season tournament. I think whatever nc game/tournament/poll we use should be able to reflect all the oddities that make our sport great.

I looked forward to the Third Saturday in October even during the pruitt years, so that for sure. And I think that our showdown in Norman on 9/21 will be a trend setter for the rest of Nicoā€™s inaugural season as a starter so thatā€™s one that I think every Vol will have circled.

Also Iā€™ll be rooting for you (or anyone else for that matter) in your match up against the gatas.
