grue,

Should’ve leaned into the Mexican more: put taco seasoning in the meatloaf, add some lime or chipotle to the mayo, etc.

grue,

(though if you’re sneaky and an utter idiot you could probably find some way to borrow for the down payment).

I borrowed for my down payment. It was in 2009, and I bought a 3bed/2bath house in a major city for ~$100k that is worth probably close to $500k now.

Am I an utter idiot, or are there circumstances where borrowing for the down payment is the right move?

grue,

I thought GEGL was supposed to fix that. Does it not, or are we still waiting on it, or what?

grue,

I’ve worked professionally both using and developing (proprietary) CAD software, but even I have trouble getting FreeCAD to do what I want.

grue,

No it doesn’t. It has to do with Republicans wanting people standing in line for hours to vote to get thirsty, give up, and leave without voting. This is because (a) Democratic-leaning areas tend to have longer lines for “reasons,” and (b) lower turnout favors Republicans.

grue,

Honestly, at least it’s oil, and maybe sorta near the right viscosity (if the engine takes 0W20, LOL)…?

It’s probably less bad than putting some other fluid like coolant or window washer fluid in the engine, at least.

<glances at MAGAs>

Are you sure about that?

grue,

“No.” – Democratic Party corporate donors

grue,

I mean, as long as you can tell it’s not opening up any network connections (e.g. by not giving the process network permission), it’s fine.

'Course, being built into a web browser might not make that easy…

grue, (edited )

IMO that’s mostly a window-management problem, not an app layout problem. The point of an ultra wide monitor setup (other than flight sims or something) is to be able to view a bunch of different things side-by-side.

Edit: speaking of which, now that we’ve come almost full-circle from no tab support, to multiple tabs in the same process, to one process per tab, it seems to me that tabs themselves ought to be part of the window decoration, not the app. I mean, they’re useful for almost everything you might want to have multiples of (editors, file managers, terminals, etc.) so why force every app maker to implement them over and over again?

I want fewer built-in features, not more of them. All of these things should be extensions, not built into the browser core.

I mean, I’d be perfectly happy for said extensions and more to be shipped by default – it would be good for Firefox to come “batteries included” even with adblocking and such, and that’s most likely the way I would use it. But I just want it to be modular and removable as a matter of principle.

I remember how monolithic Mozilla SeaMonkey got too top-heavy and forced Mozilla to start over more-or-less from scratch with Phoenix Firebird Firefox, and I want it to stick close to those roots so they don’t have to do it again.

You’re talking about a modular rendering engine, which is a different thing than what I’m talking about. I’m talking about stripping down the UI until it resembles XUL Runner, then adding the functionality back as extensions.

You’re not wrong that it’s important for the engine’s code to be organized well for developers’ benefit (and ideally for the engine as a whole to be self-contained – it’d be great if Gecko were as easily-embeddable as Blink), but I’m not so sure that users need to be able to add or remove pieces of it in a way similar to what I’m talking about for UI features.

More concretely:

I think Firefox should ship by default with all the functionality it currently has, plus uBlock Origin and some other things. But I want it to be designed such that if you went into the extensions manager and disabled everything, things like tab support, bookmarks, history, and maybe even the address bar and back button would be gone. It would still be capable of fully rendering a web page, though.

grue,

Did you miss this part of my previous comment?

I think Firefox should ship by default with all the functionality it currently has, plus uBlock Origin and some other things.

grue,

In that case, I want them exposed just like user-installed extensions, so it’s more obvious how to get rid of them if you want.

The funny thing about the Incredibles movies (both of them) is that the villains were right. It’s just too bad their methods were bad.

  • Syndrome’s goal was egalitarianism and empowerment of everyone via technology.
  • The Screen Slaver wanted people to become more self-sufficient and fill their lives with experiences, instead of wasting them idolizing heroes on TV.

(The conspiracy theorist in me can’t help but notice that Disney has a vested interest in discrediting those ideas, especially the latter.)

Fallout Series (Why don’t I like it?)

I think my first Bethesda game was Skyrim and I love Skyrim. I’ve played through Skyrim when it first came out I played through it again in the DLC came out. I played through it again on the switch I have since played through it again on PC. I love Skyrim. I played it so many times and I know it’s a meme to keep re-releasing...

grue,

One thing I found interesting about the Fallout TV show is how under-gunned the protagonist is. She’s not even armed at all most of the time (which, frankly, seems almost less realistic than toting around an entire arsenal the way you can in the game).

Maybe OP would get into the game and its story more if he went for a gameplay style that emphasized hacking or diplomacy or other stuff other than combat.

grue,

That’s not how any of this works. Copyright is a legal concept, not a technological one. You can’t strip the copyright off something by deleting part of it; the result is still a derivative work.

grue,

They were gonna do that anyway; they’re just seizing upon what Norway/Ireland/Spain did as a fig leaf of an excuse.

grue,

These are real conservatives. That thing you think conservatism was, abut moderation or caution or whatever, was never anything more than a dishonest facade.

grue,

I could be wrong, but I think it’s because Indians who’ve immigrated to the US are disproportionately upper-caste ones.

grue,

There is no such thing as BIFL nonstick.

Either get a cast-iron pan and deal with it being less non-stick, or get a cheap T-Fal or whatever and expect to throw it out and replace it every few years.

grue,

The weird thing about this isn’t an old Pizza Hut getting turned into a house, but rather rezoning a suburban-style commercial lot residential. Usually that sort of thing only happens in older areas, where they’re trying to get rid of walkable corner stores or something.

grue,

Smash burgers and thick burgers can both be good; they’re just different.
