It occurs to me that, unless you're also following my pride and joy, @SailingNewbie (and a cursory check suggests most of you aren't which, fair enough, we all have limited attention to spend), you may have no idea that I'm going through the biggest, weirdest ordeal of my life.

At the end of July, I suffered a complete rupture of my left achilles tendon for the second time.

Took about a month until I could have surgery to repair it, which seemed to go well enough. But a few weeks after the sutures came out, the incision dehisced (opened back up).

A few more weeks, another surgery to clean and re-stitch the wound. When those sutures came out, it opened again immediately.

Then there were a couple of plastic surgery consults, a period of let's see if it starts closing on its own, then a rush to get a third procedure done before the insurance out-of-pocket max clock reset. This time, a z-plasty.

It failed before the sutures were even out.

Then there were holidays and waiting and a fourth procedure was done last week (yay, another year of outrageous medical bills). This time, in preparation for a skin graft, a skin substitute was implanted. This was done with local anesthetic, and while hearing and feeling someone scrape dead cells off your tendon is certainly a unique experience, it's not one I can recommend.

We're approaching six months, now, and I've been laid up for a lot of it with brief periods of being semi-ambulatory with the assistance of a special boot.

If my body doesn't vascularize the skin substitute, next steps will be even worse. So this is likely my last hope of walking on my own this year.
