Evergreen quote about IT products:

"It is unusual and refreshing to see a product appearing on the market with its software ready to run"

That's from a review of the Vectrex video game system in 1982. 😂

@thomasbeagle Lol best - how good though that when you power it on there's no loading required!

I just tried the Windows CoPilot demo that seems to be part of Windows 10 now ... I get 30 free uses by the looks of it - here is my prompt: "make a picture of an american muscle car driving towards the camera with a wide angle showing police cars in pursuit. The style should be neo tokyo and the muscle car should be black with dark windows. The buildings should be tall and there should be a low sun in the background highlighting everything", and here are the results :)

Oh wow and another great chase shot: "change camera angle to be more like 45 degrees, camera from behind the chase, add debris"

Definitely cancelling everything and rugging up with some beers and YouTube tonight. Might even put the fire on.

Success: some Mac’s Apparition, Mac’s Showboat, Moa’s St. Joseph’s, a lot of random YouTube: bad lip reading, piano explanations with Charles Cornell, a bit of GTA2 (!), playing with Windows CoPilot (as you saw). My favourite YouTube pastime is watching people nerd out hard about things they love 🥰

Last night I was lying awake attempting to remember the lyrics to Bob by Weird Al.

I had the ending of one line and was attempting to reverse it to calculate the beginning.

Very difficult at 0100.

40 years ago we had a '100 year flood'. Just six years after we'd had the last one. 🙃

Our family home was enough above ground that we just had surface flooding, but my Grandma and Uncle had to be rescued by boat from their place in Waikiwi. 🛶

So it turns out that the guy who built his reputation as a once-in-a-generation engineering genius on the design of his futuristic electric cars actually doesn't know the first thing about vehicle design, the amazing truck he was personally responsible for creating is a laughable failure in every possible respect, and that a decade of fantastic successes happened only because he was actively kept away from the management of his own company by his executive staff

Can anyone confirm this for me - it seems that the online school tekura.org.nz is using Chrome Enterprise to manage installed extensions you sign in with your @tekura.org.nz account. Of the extensions installed there is one called Prey (https://preyproject.com/) which includes location tracking, remote wipe, encryption, fetching of arbitrary files etc. Have asked Te Kura about it but have been told by the first responder that "it's not part of Te Kura" and "we don't own Google Chrome".

And while we're at it thinking about RSS feeds, what about the reverse? I loathe the process of submitting a web form, as there's no guarantee that a) it's going to work, b) that the info will get to eyeballs, c) that you will get a receipt. We're long overdue an application called "Submissions" that is used to manage the submissions you make to entities, almost like an email client. Entities define their submission schema and validation, you then progressively fill in and submit when ready.

gurubob,
@gurubob@mastodon.nz avatar

This would also come with built in support for statuses (e.g. received, in progress, completed, archived etc.) and would support threading. Imagine the experience you have with email when replying to an email with a ticketing system behind it. The big thing here is not to reinvent what we have, but put the user in full control of the information they submit.

gurubob,
@gurubob@mastodon.nz avatar

@aligorith Web Devs (me included) can’t be trusted to make robust form submission solutions that always end up with a message being delivered to eyeballs. There are so many things in the way, including the user’s browser and things like closing a tab part way through. Throw it all away and start from scratch I say 👍

gurubob,
@gurubob@mastodon.nz avatar

@aligorith thinking more about this, the submission that is stored in the app would include a copy of the schema also and you should be able to send this as a file to someone and they could open it also, completely independently of where the schema was hosted. You should be able to create revised versions of the submission and send them, and it would be up to the recipient as to whether they accept them, as their schema requirements may have changed but at least you would retain a portable copy.

Stuff have dropped X as a platform. Good move. But what's the natural replacement, or should we be looking back to lightweight self-published platform agnostic solutions like RSS? Thinking about this for all businesses or organisations who have a need to publish articles.

gurubob,
@gurubob@mastodon.nz avatar

@RFPatterson Well I think so but I'm very interested to see what - if anything - Stuff decide to back in the social space. Whatever they choose is a nod of approval that will be seen by tens of thousands (?) of kiwi readers.
