jeena, to RedditMigration in Unlike previous attempts at trying reddit alternatives (like Voat), kbin and much of the lemmyverse doesn’t seem to be plagued with extreme far right buffoonery.
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

But we have out fair share of Mao and Stalin lovers and Xi loveboys. It’s very simmilar. But I guess they are mostly contained to one or two instances.

jeena, to asklemmy in I am joining a gym, I really only want to loose weight (expressly in my belly and chin area)

The truth is that you can’t outrun a shitty diet.

@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

Back when he was alive Hans Rossling gave a great TED talk about it: ted.com/…/hans_rosling_the_magic_washing_machine

jeena, to selfhosted in If I self host a Lemmy instance for just myself and maybe a few friends are there any risks?
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

Federation is implemented by copying the content from other servers to your database and file system, so if your users subscribe to something from a different server it will be copied to your server.

But it will be only served to your users, not to the public. Only the communities hosted on your instance will be served to the public.

jeena, to fediverse in Japan Earthquake Alert App moves from Twitter to Mastodon, currently has 488k posts & 19.9k followers
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

Oh wow so they had 1.5 milion subscribers on Twitter but they have half a milion on Mastodon unnerv.jp/ I wasn’t aware that Mastodon is that popular in Japan.

jeena, to technology in My Opinion: NewPipe, Piped, Invidious, etc's days are numbered.
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

I’m subscribed to 94 channels on PeerTube and get barely one new video to watch every 2 days. This is both a problem that the people just don’t post anything but also that for some reason new videos just don’t show up even if I subscribe to them, that especially happens with TILvids channels for some reason.

Also here is the very short list of PeerTube instances I found which are not about conspiracy theories or nazi shit:

jeena, to asklemmy in why arent guitars made with 3.5mm jacks rather than quarter inch jacket
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

While jumping and running on scene you want something sturdy not a whimpy 3.5mm jack.

jeena, to news in Israel ‘severing all contact with Gaza’, will send Gazan workers back to enclave | CNN
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

I mean if they would stay in Israel how would they be able to be bombed? They might hit some Jewish houses in kollateral dammage.

jeena, to technology in Why Thread is Matter’s biggest problem right now

Somehow I read the title as “Why Threads is Meta’s biggest problem right now” …

jeena, to worldnews in Elon Musk says X will fund legal bills if users treated unfairly by bosses
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

Can’t we add a rule to not allow news which only are created by “Musk said …”?

jeena, to asklemmy in Why would my parents always enter the BIOS when booting when I was younger
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

My assumption is that the default boot device was wrong and they needed to go to the bios to switch it but would never save the correct order so they had to do it every time.

jeena, to fediverse in PeerTube has a federation problem
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

I think you’re totally right. The big difference is that while for a lemmy instance to show you other instances content under ‘All’ only one other user from your instance needs to subscribe to it and you will be exposed to it. On PeerTube if another user subscribes you will never know about that instance because the server admin needs to manually federate with that instance.

But because there is no good differentiation between ‘All’ and ‘Local’ many admins - including me - just don’t federate with other instances automatically. What made it worse - I’m not sure if it got better over time - was that if you automatically federated then there would be naked people without NSFW at the top of every discovery, there would be antivax, nazis, all the fringe groups which weren’t allowed on YouTube anymore. That would make it impossible to find the local videos and your instance would look like it’s run by nazis and would offer bad quality porn.

jeena, (edited ) to selfhosted in Self-hosted Password Manager Recommendation?
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

keepassxc.org as Password manager and 2FA and syncthing.net to sync the database between your devices without a central server.

  • You can have several databases (one for wife, one for you)
  • You can store your 2FA there
  • You can make nested groups of your passwords
  • You can store certificates and other attachments as files or custom fields like backup codes, etc.

Don’t use Keepass or KeepassX but the KeepassXC version is the community version most polished and with most functionality.

There are many 3rd party clients which can read/write the keepassx database file like:

Instead of Syncthing you can also use some other file sync if you have it set up already like iCloud, Nextcloud, Dropbox, but Syncthing I find is the easiest set up and forget.

jeena, to asklemmy in What is the Lemmy quivalent of a Subreddit, a Sublemmy?

jeena, to world in Settlers invade private land. The Palestinian owners are arrested. Another outpost is born
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

3 years ago I visited Hebron and talked to some of the Palestinians, asked them questions, etc. It became a very interesting episode of my podcast jeena.net/pods/21

I also went out to a families home which has been bulldozed away by the Israeli military a couple of times and they built it back up.

Here is a picture of some children I met in Hebron, they were learning English on the rooftop I stayed.
