I probably biked here. This is not an official channel - please direct ward/City issues requiring attention to my and my staff's attention at jeff.leiper@ottawa.ca. I track stuff at jeffleiper.ca.

I live 300m from a hardware store and from an open air market. It’s time I owned a wagon.

A rare westbound yesterday on the ride home.

Yesterday's commute was an easy-peasy ride. I'm looking forward to heading west this afternoon to Ron Kolbus - probably catch the tailwind there and assess a rack-and-roll option home. https://youtu.be/PULfgjNf2q4?feature=shared

Stupid tailwind was actually a stupid headwind coming off the stupid river.

Now up over 400 trips since January 1. Bike is a big plurality of my trips, but something like 70 of those are straight commutes.

jleiper,
@jleiper@urbanists.social avatar

My job takes me off-site from the office a fair bit to places in my neighbourhood. A quarter of those trips are by bus, usually to the other end of my neighbourhood a couple of clicks away, and I walk to a lot of meetings from my house. Scooting is catching up and it'll be interesting to see whether isolated to scooter months it isn't actually higher than the bus. I prefer the scooter to the bus since it's a fraction of the time, but it's weather dependent.

No surprise, the scooter is right in that 2-kilometre range and the bus is in the 3-kilometre area. I use my bike to leave the neighbourhood, either as a straight commute or going a little further by doing the main distance on the train with my bike/scooter for last-mile. I'm guessing weather would be the key variable there for one or the other.

Some sketchiness during the ride in today, but saw a friend and former colleague (at 1:18ish) who has a spiffy new e-assist. They love it and I gotta say: it's a beaut. https://urbanists.video/w/rgQ5mjCfjZBZxX8k44zsoC

Time to get these in the ground.

jleiper,
@jleiper@urbanists.social avatar

@casseagull maybe? I only know what works for me, which is to let them get nice and tall indoors and then bury them almost the full height. Roots will shoot out of everything that's buried to make for a more robust plant. For the first couple of months once they're in the ground I pinch out the side shoots to focus on the fruit while the main vine grows. By the end of Augustish they'll be at the top of the spiral stakes I use and I just let it go wild.

A couple of iffy moments in the bike lanes in the past couple of days. Today's was genuinely a close call and I'm glad the cyclist was ok.

And it's been a while, but I got in the can last week.

NU and Sunday paper run today - think I’ll get my Commanda on with only a hint of an easterly headwind this morning.

Decided to train east, bike west

Coffee and milk achieved; go get a paper then Commanda it home.

Paper unlocked. Get my bridge on!

That was a delightful ride home. Market was hopping! Video after I finish my chores, probably nap.

This may go down as one of my favourite ride vids. The NU to Hintonburg run via Alexandra and Commanda, including the secret elevator connection from Mackenzie to Sussex someone suggested to me a while ago. I suspect I'll use that whenever traffic is heavier to stay on the Mackenzie contra-flow from Daly when coming from the south. The elevator car is a tight fit, but beats navigating Rideau/Sussex. https://urbanists.video/w/bNsczNpTo8EeCD2oPRs5GW

A really happy video first for me! This morning was the first time Natalie and I left for our respective offices on our bikes together. Kiss cam at 1:47 as we go our separate ways. The e-assist bike and safe William Commanda route converted Nat to cycle commuting last year, and she's having a blast. Finally did at least part of the commute together.
