🚆 I've just been sent this screenshot from the DB Navigator, showing a 3-hour delay in Berlin, even though the train was on time.

The personnel on board told passengers to ignore the delay, saying that it was "an error from the AI". (But emails offering compensation were sent).

Do you train nerds know about this DB system to predict delays? And why it fails so often that DB employees learned to ignore it?

@algowatching no idea. I’ll ask a few people.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@algowatching contact says there have been some diversions via Dessau, so perhaps that was the cause, and then the train in the end wasn’t diverted. But more likely it was a data entry error. He reckons the chance this is a AI gone wrong is low.

Ok. planning done for now

Today is fete du pain in Ravières - the once a year they fire up the communal oven

The baker attends to the oven
The plaque confirming the renovation of the oven

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@hans_zelf Correct. There is a regular bakery.

@arratoon No. A retired Boulanger comes from the neighbouring village.

😡

I’ve messed up

Riga - Vilnius train 2nd June (so a fortnight from now) is sold out!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Phew 😅

I managed to find a way

Riga 🇱🇻 - Siauliai 🇱🇹 1st class
then
Siauliai 🇱🇹 - Vilnius 🇱🇹 2nd class in the same train

... and so it will work

But this is the success of the Riga - Vilnius route. People really take it!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@grlodi Seat reservations mandatory. But yes, I found a 1st/2nd class split in Siauliai so it works. But had I tried this in a few days there would have been the danger it would not have worked!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin it was only introduced in December! And now less than 6 months into the service it is already sold out. There is a discussion about a second daily train, but I reckon you could happily run 4 a day.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin when I went to the Baltics in 2022 there was nothing at that border, and I had to cycle across.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Unicorn Dieses Zug hat ein Reservierungspflicht, also anderen Tricks waren nicht möglich!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ehrba And I agree with @Island_Martha - there’s much more rail potential in the Baltics than people realise, especially Latvia that (unlike Estonia) still has a quite terrible railway.

„Verspätung im Ausland“, hmm, Deutsche Bahn? Hier steht pünktliche Abfahrt in Zürich, +10 in Offenburg, jetzt kurz vor Hamburg +40.
Hrmpf.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@BioSchweiz Oh that’s not even news. Verspätung im Ausland is a perfect excuse for DB dysfunction 🙂

Blog post summing up my investigations this week into SNCF's decision to stop selling most international train tickets

“SNCF is stopping sales of most international tickets – a decision rooted in incompetence, and communicated with malevolence”

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Torbencht there’d be more backlash if - say - DB did that.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PaulTR Absolutely not. They’re still investing in it. And even if they abandoned it it’d still not solve this problem.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@aslakr I know there are plenty of firms using S3, Inc Eurostar. No idea if it’s flawless, but it does seem to work.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@filiplachert What sites can even re-sell PKP IC? I wasn’t aware of any!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@filiplachert does it sell anything international as well?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DoubleArobase right, absolutely, and yes she did say that!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@filiplachert do you know anyone working at Koleo? I'd like to find out more!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@sznowicki Not very systematically though in my experience. But yes somehow.

SNCF Connect “Train Full”

The train… not even half full 🤦‍♂️

And ok, there are stops between Paris and Nuits-sous-Ravières but normally more get off than get on at Sens, Joigny etc.

And yes I just booked on a later one and took the 13:35 earlier one

Empty seats
Even more empty seats
And yet more empty seats

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@_Hemmschuh Right, I am also no fan of Regio2N, but they at least have more seats with a reasonable level of comfort than Régiolis. Neither are pleasant trains though - noisy, poor doors, rather bumpy ride.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@_Hemmschuh but what an innovative piece of French engineering! Sod that you can't actually deploy them properly… 🙂
