I’m at Crawley STEM fest and the Thales kids quiz thing has this question in it. I am unreasonably angry.

@Floppy Nothing unreasonable about that.

Of course, the answer should probably be Claude Shannon, just because.

Electronics nerds! I need your wisdom, advice, and admonishment.

I have a small circuit board with a large USB-A plug.

I want to remove the USB-A and replace it with a USB-C plug.

Is that possible? If so, what would I need?

I have a soldering iron that I've used at least twice!

(The connection needs data and power - although not a lot of either. I don't have space to add an A-to-C converter dongle to it.)

THANKS GANG!

@Edent Gut reaction is that it's not possible, or that it would be so complicated & tricky as not to be worth it. Reasons for this: USB C plug is double-sided, so it's not going to be a simple 1-to-1 connection. Will probably also have very small legs, so hand soldering will be like carving grains of rice.

If there's Another Way, I'd look at that first.

@Edent Ooooh, that's quite clever. That would take care of all the electrical connections, but will be mechanically risky. Check that the overall length won't be too much for your situation, and use over-thick solid wire to make the connections (e.g. the wire in 1.5mm twin-and-earth), then provide some other mechanical support (e.g. bit of plastic stuck on with sticky pads).

What are your space constraints? Could you run the connection over a ribbon to Somewhere Else rather than having to have the original board right next to the connector?

@Edent As in the Framework laptop? Shame they don't make an empty expansion box...

jonobennett,

@Edent What I would do were I doing it for myself would be to buy the USB A expansion card, open it up, remove the USB A socket and see if I could fit the original PCB inside somehow.

Are polls on Mastodon anonymous?

Presumably the server has to keep track of the votes it received to prevent double counting.

So a server admin should be able to see who voted for what.

And if the poster is on a self-hosted instance, they can see the number of votes *and *who cast them.

Have I got that correct?

@Edent I've always worked on the assumption that whoever has physical and/or root access to a server can see everything of yours that you put on it, one way or another.

The surprising part is not that math grad students named Cox and Zucker would come up with the idea of writing a paper together just as a joke.

It's that they followed through after they became professors, and wrote a paper that was actually rather significant.

@johncarlosbaez Does it have any connection to Kummer theory?
