Loving partner and dad. I'm a cartographer that loves technology, or a technologist that loves maps. Both work. I enjoy reading and contributing to the geospatial community, global and local.

Earlier this week an episode of the Geomob Podcast was published where Steven Feldman interviews yours truly. It was a lot of fun to chat with Steven about Elastic, my experience in the geospatial industry, and Open Source in general. I could also advocate a bit about data privacy and digital identity which is a topic that has picked my interest even more lately with all the shit that is hitting that social network we all know about.

Great post and overall blog 👇

https://ergaster.org/posts/2023/10/05-my-server-can-burn/

I've been thinking for a long time on setting up a VPS to self host some services but lack of time and energy to do it properly (as this post describes) is blocking me.

Yet, I'm also more inclined to share the load in a coop fashion so I may never do it, or do it just for learning and never go to "production".

@tetrislife a blocker for me is to rely into too many moving parts that can break or rot over time. I'd prefer something I can dispose and rebuild quickly without much hassle, hence my interest on Infra as Code solutions like Terraform and Ansible

It is very unlikely that I will attend this year @foss4geurope conference in Tartu, Estonia 😭. Yet, I'm in the program committee and giving a hand on reviewing some of the 147 talk proposals. The deadline for review ends this weekend and almost all talks have at least 7 reviews from the committee which I find amazing.

If you want to take a look to the conference proposals, they are open for a community vote!

Me pregunto si podrían volver a tener sentido los "planets" de blogs ahora mismo, dado el movimiento bloguer que está moviéndose. 🤔

jorgesanz,
@jorgesanz@mapstodon.space avatar

jorgesanz,
@jorgesanz@mapstodon.space avatar

@superwillyfoc por cierto que @sarajw montó una especie de planet pero agrupado por autores en https://rs.sjoy.lol/ está muy bien y es software libre para replicar, por si te interesa :)

jorgesanz,
@jorgesanz@mapstodon.space avatar

@sarajw a date-based feed and an OPML would be great additions!!

Planets are as old as blogs, especially around open-source projects like Debian, Ubuntu, Postgres, Arch, and so on. BTW, I think it was planet Gnome that established a quirky tradition of using "floating heads" for the contributors' images check https://planet.gnome.org/ :-)

@superwillyfoc

jorgesanz,
@jorgesanz@mapstodon.space avatar

@sarajw @superwillyfoc I still have my floating head picture around xD

Some years ago some friends gifted me a Futurama head but old habits stick and eventually I took out the alcohol (?) vase and got back again to a floating head 😂

@aperalesf @sarajw @superwillyfoc @victorhck also, talking about RSS I recently implemented the XSL stylesheet to render my RSS feed on the browser so you can visit any of the feeds on my site like https://jorgesanz.net/posts/index.xml and explore it comfortably

Took the idea from @joel at https://fosstodon.org/@joel/111960871815998664 and it was indeed easier than I always feared to be (my previous experience with xslt was not a pleasant one).

It was about time I wrote about my shenanigans with and such things. Basically I marked everything as read by mistake and decided to accept it and move on. And add a bunch of new feeds too!

This is day 10 of

jorgesanz,
@jorgesanz@mapstodon.space avatar

@joel thanks for the blog suggestions!

Regarding the "accident", my workflow is actually to do Inbox Zero for RSS on so I usually split my reading time into two types:

When I can't put much time I go through the feeds and mark as read everything that is not that interesting. If anything catches my attention then I read it right away if it's short. For long readings I star them and send them to a read later app.

Anyone know of good online tools that take in an RSS/Atom URL and spit out simple HTML?

I've found https://rss.bloople.net but it doesn't seem to like every feed I give it. Ditto https://nerdiedad.com/tools/rss-to-html. https://www.rssdog.com is a bit too opinionated and styles the output.

(I don't [yet...] have a server where I can host my own.)

@sarajw at @osgeo we've been using Venus to build what is called a "planet" that aggregates feeds from multiple blog sources.

https://planet.osgeo.org

Runs on a cron job but on a modern setup a scheduled CI action would do the same.
