it would be nice for the UX/UI people to finally understand that some of us just open a lot of tabs, instead of the endless "you're doing it wrong, oh my god!โ€

mala,

@piger I feel you!
What are you using to manage them? I found Simple Tab Groups works well for me (even if I think I just scratched the surface of the features it provides)

mala,

@piger itโ€™s comforting to see so many similarities - I sometimes dump URLs on Joplin as my poor bookmarking system ๐Ÿ˜‚

I did great with del.icio.us almost 20yrs ago, perhaps I should try postmarks as an alternative (@andypiper whatโ€™s your take on it?).

I understand the friction abt using a new tool, I was feeling the same. The good thing abt simple tab groups is that it does not really change your current way of doing things, you just archive stuff in a group you can pick up later

mala,

@ploum This is so interesting! I was looking for something similar for PicoGopher at the time, as I wanted these tiny thingies to sync with each other (or from online sources) and then provide offline access to websites, gopherholes, capsules.
Next step: play with it and check how much of it can be run on a pico ๐Ÿ™‚

mala,

@ploum I am doing a few experiments to see how hard it would be to make a python client for gwit... I saw you were interested in a git backend for offpunk, so I thought perhaps you might find this useful: https://github.com/aittalam/gwit_tests

(at some point I should also write more decent code ๐Ÿ˜… but I wanted to release stuff early and see if anyone wanted to play with it!)

mala,

@mike aaand landed ๐Ÿ˜ Thanks for the chat, it was a great idea! Iโ€™ll try to join next times too ๐Ÿ™‚

The boom in LLMs is going to hollow out a number of knowledge-worker industries โ€” for example, writing boilerplate code or technical documentation

Not because it does it well but because the flacks can sell upper management on the idea that it can do it at all, as @pluralistic recently pointed out

This sale is a pig-in-a-poke, and the winning move is to not be holding the bag when the actual code or documentation is found to be terrible

mala,

@trochee @emilymbender

  • spread knowledge of how LLMs work and how to properly evaluate them (current eval is crap)
  • use the above to show when small open models can compare to large, closed ones
  • share these models, how they have been evaluated, the data used to train them (esp high-quality, human-annotated, harder to replicate data)
  • show non-LLM alternatives: there are still so many problems which can be solved with them

TIL the Rocky Horror Picture Show had a loosely-connected sequel.

mala,

@evan never dared to watch it, but apparently there are still a few torrents aroundโ€ฆ ๐Ÿค”

Are you a RHPS fan? I used to watch it every week in a theatre (double feature!) years ago!

Highway ad: "Text OR drive, there is no AND"
Me: "I'm not sure if this gets the reaction they desire in an area full of software engineers"
@saraislet: "Why not, first you attempt texting, if texting fails you drive seems fine"
Me: "I guess 'there is no pid = fork(); if (pid == 0) text(); else drive();' didn't fit on the poster"

mala,

@sophieschmieg @saraislet Wow, what they say is basically โ€œtext XOR driveโ€, which makes it impossible for you not to do any of those! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Ok, you are on the highway so you are supposed to be drivingโ€ฆ But what if you have to pull over? Should you start texting immediately? They should have run proper unit tests.

IMHO โ€œtext NAND driveโ€ would have been a much better choice

@andypiper In Fora by any chance? Iโ€™m gonna be there tomorrow with, hmmโ€ฆ 100% of my team ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I got some exciting news this morning! I cannot share publicly yet, but the outcome I can share:

I get to work full time as an open source software developer on projects I am passionate about for at least the rest of the year.

This is a dream come true. I am so grateful.

mala,

@Jeremiah thatโ€™s great news, congratulations!

Great point by @ben: The core need being expressed by millions of users isnโ€™t โ€œget me a decentralized protocol that nobody owns where I can have my choice of algorithms and appsโ€. Itโ€™s โ€œget me a platform that works consistently, with less abuseโ€. Sometimes itโ€™s also appended with, โ€œwhere I can build a following for me / my brand / my employer and measure my progress.โ€

https://newsletter.werd.io/p/this-moment-isnt-about-decentralization

mala,

@davidslifka @ben Great food for thought. I agree this should be a reminder for us to be mindful about what kind of ultimate goal we should set for ourselves. I also think that not every software artifact is a โ€œproductโ€, while every product relies on protocols, frameworks, and algorithms, some of which are good while others are inherently bad. Thus, I believe improving them while allowing others to build better and better systems that rely on them is something valuable and worth focusing on.

mala,

@tchambers @Ciantic @davidslifka @ben Thatโ€™s a great point: not having to push metrics is a huge advantage. But even if (smaller) instances have fewer users per moderator, IMO it is harder to support them with tools that surface abuses on the platform.

@algorithms https://fediview.com can now recommend posts based on your personal post history. The are generated in real-time and the system is designed to be privacy-respecting.

It's still in beta and https://fediview.com/plus is required for now, but let me know if you would like to help me test it.

mala,

@adamghill @algorithms This is great, happy to do these chats anytime! ๐Ÿ™‚
