Framing and hanging art involves far more mathematics than I like 🤔

In other news, opens this afternoon at 2pm and @forgeandcraft has an open studio Thursday-Sunday!

Unless Apple is about to announce that you can choose to install macOS on iPads at WWDC (or a huge overhaul of iPadOS), the pricing of the new iPads is pretty wild.

(US prices shown)

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@tonyarnold @thomasfuchs I priced one up earlier, and I literally said the same thing to my friend about it. Even with a trade-in, nope, not worth it to me - unless I can suddenly use macOS on the iPad when I want to switch contexts.

Co-authored an update from the @MastodonEngineering team with my friend @renchap - a sneak peek at what is coming in 4.3 (and looking ahead from there). We'll aim to make these updates a regular feature for the blog. Let us know what you think! https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/05/trunk-tidbits-april-2024/

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

... as with many large software projects, there's a balance between choosing features to implement, keeping things stable, and fixing known or emergent issues. We have to make decisions about the scope for a release, so there will always be some things that need to wait until the next time. We want to try to share what we've been working on in a more consumable format, more often.

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@rzeta0 thanks for pointing this out - I'd taught myself to use the time (which I also used on Twitter) to get to the permalink, and hadn't appreciated a) that it works differently elsewhere and b) the actual UX expectation around being able to grab a permalink. Good point. As mentioned, we do have to find time to address, but thanks for surfacing further.

I've had so many issues with my Anycubic resin 3d printer, and for this and other reasons, have been considering an FDM/filament printer.

Is it fair to say that most printers in the $150-300 range are crap? I just saw on one of her LED necklace tutorials that @geekmomprojects uses the Prusa MINI+, and it seems like a good number of makers speak highly of that brand, so maybe that's where I'll look. But any tips on where else to look/stay away from are appreciated!

I wanted to find something I knew I'd seen on Mastodon a few weeks ago - @ivory for the win, I'd bookmarked the post, and was able to search my bookmarks 🙏🏻 exactly the kind of thing I've wanted to be able to do with my social channels for a long time.

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@skyfaller @ivory I think it's a feature that Ivory implemented in the client, yes - it is very handy.

In my past life, I was excited about Twitter's bookmarks API and the opportunity to build some interesting integrations to e.g. search, tag and organise your own content. I really see the things folks build using different APIs as useful "value-adds" to platforms that should be embraced a lot more often.

It's been an amazing journey since I started toot.community. However, due to personal commitments, I'm stepping down. The community deserves undivided attention, which I can't provide anymore. So, I'm handing the reins over to the reliable hands of the Fedihosting Foundation (https://fedihosting.foundation). I have confidence they'll keep treating you the way you deserve.

I'm grateful for the connections I made here, and I'd like to thank you all for your support and trust in me. It means a lot. ❤️

I've long thought I probably should stand vs sit in front of the computer, but never made it happen. Now it looks like a sore tailbone will force me to, at least for a while. I have so many questions, and will appreciate any thoughts and advice.

Ideally I'll find a way to keep using my beloved Captain Kirk Chair which is ergonomic for my hands and wrists if not my butt, but maybe I'll need to mount the keyboard on a standing desk.

andypiper,

@judell I will not argue for staying sitting - I wish I had a standing / convertible desk, myself - but, I’ve been using coccyx cut-out cushions for quite a few years, a previous employer provided them for me specifically, e.g. https://www.posturite.co.uk/posturite-coccyx-cut-out-wedge

This right here is the value of having an open API (and @bardi also makes the point of thanking the folks who help to build TootSDK, as something he built Tusks on top of). What a great app - I just bought myself a license. #MastodonAPI #Fediverse

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@bardi you’ve got a great memory - I’m afraid mine was a bit “scrambled” by the trauma of October/November 2022 - I’m excited to see that you kept thinking about these ideas, and picked Mastodon as somewhere to try them 🙏🏻

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@thisismissem @bardi I’ve been helping the team create a post about technical progress in 4.3 so yes, I’m aware of what you’ve been improving! Thank you! The new me scope could fit really nicely for this particular app.

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@renchap @bardi exactly! there are always ways to focus on specific use cases, platforms, native experiences etc that are difficult for a team with broader user bases to cater for. I always think about users with specific accessibility and usage needs that I personally don’t have, and so I am unlikely to build something that can address those requirements really well (one or two particular client apps for folks with sight-related needs have stayed in mind, from my past life)
