Following up on last month's news about Synapse and Dendrite, @element has begun implementing its planned forks, starting with Synapse.

We recommend reading their latest blog post for details: https://element.io/blog/synapse-now-lives-at-github-com-element-hq-synapse/

The Foundation is pleased to see that, not only do the forked projects remain under an open source license, but Element binds itself, through the CLA, to keeping 3rd party contributions in the open source commons.

We thank @OpenForumEurope, @osi, @EclipseFdn, and the constellation of FOSS foundations who have been doing fantastic advocacy work on the EU's Cyber Resilience Act.

The legislation was passed last Friday with carveouts for open source that is developed in a not-for-profit manner. Learn more in OFE's press release: https://openforumeurope.org/eu-cyber-resilience-act-takes-a-leap-forward/

Several potential speakers asked us to extend the deadline of our CfP for the Matrix Devroom at FOSDEM.

We are extending the deadline to Friday 8th December, and we're looking forward to reviewing your proposals!

We're glad to see that Tchap, which is built on #Matrix, is one of the messaging tools that remain available to French civil servants following this change in policy: https://www.politico.eu/article/france-requires-ministers-to-swap-whatsapp-signal-for-french-alternatives/

@koyax Definitely good news for the Matrix ecosystem!

We did notice the implied claim by the officials involved that Signal is less secure, and we'd be hesitant to make that assertion ourselves. Signal has done objectively good work on that front. We'll leave judgment on that comparison to security experts.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@slackline Indeed, the stated reasoning is ... curious. To your point, no software is devoid of vulnerabilities!

@cos No bridge we're aware of ... yet 👀

Good idea in itself however this remark ""These digital tools are not devoid of security flaws, and therefore cannot guarantee the security of conversations and information shared via them,""is a bit weak, also not supported by evidence, any tool has flaws and a tool like Signal is quite good for example.

@janvlug @ErikJonker The order is such that they are also allowed to use Tchap, which is based on Matrix. We're glad to see open source and open standards in the mix!

We're sorry to announce that we are not able to bring the bridge to back online, and we have begun working through clean up tasks.

If you need a bridge for your community, you still have options. More details in the full announcement: https://matrix.org/blog/2023/11/28/shutting-down-bridge-to-libera-chat/

@vampire_lord_red_fang Yes, there are ways to host your own bridge! We have links to resources along those lines in the blog post.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@projectmoon We offer background on that in the blog post, and you can see the other posts covering that here: https://matrix.org/category/bridges/

@usul As an open source protocol, with open governance, stewarded by a nonprofit, it's hard to make sense of that comment.

But we welcome your elaboration, critique, and accountability. It is only through conversation that we can fully realize our collective goals, after all.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@danie10 We were hoping and pushing for a different outcome, but ultimately the resources weren't there to operate and maintain it to the degree that was necessary. It's a relief to hear you had a good experience, alas that was far from universal.

For now, we recommend folks explore self-hosting bridges and many folks are reporting success with that route. Details linked in the blog post.

Our hope is to build the Foundation up so that it can itself operate bridges like this in the future.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@ck As useful as Cory Doctorow's concept of enshittification is, it has no utility in describing what is happening here.

Matrix remains an open protocol, under open source license, with open governance, stewarded by a nonprofit.

The facts here are just that a service provider in the space can no longer afford to donate time to a operate a free community service (eg, the bridge). That's a far cry from the moves we see in big tech to lock people in and extract money from them. @element
