Middle aged white guy trying to become less ignorant over time. I build websites the "traditional" way.

I’ve been building websites for ~20yrs. Progressive Enhancement, HTML/CSS/JS, and accessible practices will always be core to quality work. Frameworks come and go.

Very exciting news! This is the thing that gives Custom Properties their SUPERPOWERS.

Yes, you can use them to enforce type safety, limit their inheritance, and set up a default but what I like most about them is that YOU CAN ANIMATE/TRANSITION REGISTERED CUSTOM PROPERTIES.

@bramus Yeah, I tried this for an animated background gradient on the whole page a while back.

Then I saw how much CPU it was using on an M1 Mac.

Nope! Nope nope nope.

Anyone using OSX and Warp with Neovim - is there a way to stop the built-in OSX Accent key crap from appearing when you're in the editor?

I'm pressing and holding J to move the char up. Not to type an accented J.

Just ordered some vintage bicycle parts from a web shop build in 2006 (according to its footer).

Clicking on images opens them in a 340px wide pop up (new window).
The address form has a field for a fax number.
The checkout progress is illustrated by an animated GIF showing a panting cartoon cyclist.

I absolutely love that this apparently 18 year old shop is still functional.

@rangermeier I would not love what that likely means for its web security.

As someone who's job it is to build and run such sites, and has seen a fair share of old sites.

"I'll use the PHPStorm defaults. Ok, What's the shortcut for the built in Terminal? ... Alt + F12"

...

JetBrains, the way to get the function keys on a Mac keyboard is to press and hold Alt. F12 on an Apple keyboard is Alt + the volume up key.

How are you expecting me to hit Alt twice? I can't hit F12 without already using the Alt modifier key.

Tries it. Opens OSX's Settings > Sounds menu.

Does no one test things?

mattwilcox,

Then why are they the default keybindings you ship?!

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

Incidentally, whoever designed the macOS shortcuts settings should be taken back to grade school.

How are you supposed to find what actions are bound to a known keybinding in this? You can't.

I'm not convinced it's even listing all of them.

You litterally just downloaded the installer yourself from your own Photoshop installer, and then installed Creative Cloud.

What the hell are you talking about, Adobe?

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

Oh, and you're going to also hog all my bandwidth while you download your bloated ass app as well? Not respect that I'm doing stuff already?

I hate Adobe.

mattwilcox, to random
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

For as much as I moan about Apple and OSX, this is one feature I do like rather a lot.

Get wrecked, application vendors constantly trying to install bogus shite I don't want running. I want your app to work when it's open, not your hand up my system's ass every waking moment.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

"Creative Cloud wants to 'make changes'" ... cancel

Nope, you don't get to. Explain yourself or just get denied.

So I fresh installed OSX Sonoma. And I use a trackball. Have for years.

But no matter whether I toggle Natural Scrolling on or off, they both feel wrong - and I have no idea why, or what my old OSX was set to.

But I've been ping-ponging all morning and every time I go to scroll, I go the wrong way, no matter which I've got it set to.

I have played myself.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

Also, trying to leave all programs set to defaults and re-learn them. Long run, it's less hassle and more portable.

But, damn. Does feel like I've got one hand in a boxing glove or something.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@Tijn Yeah, in the past I just "had to get going" with PHPStorm in particular, from VSCode. So I swapped tons of things. Bit more spare time atm tho, so I can take the hit of constant "oh, nope, not that... errrrr"

I saw a few posts lately about why we don't use CSS container queries that much and it got me thinking of where I used them.

I used them a lot in my recent interactive guide on container queries. Yes, I used container queries to build the demos to explain container queries 😀

Happy inspecting! https://ishadeed.com/article/css-container-query-guide/

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@shadeed9 Who are these people not using them? I don't understand where this narrative comes from.

I switched entirely to them the moment cross browser support was green. Why wouldn't you?

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@thudfactor Do they? I ... haven't found that to be the case personally. Though maybe its just one of those things that make sense to some people and less sense to others.

I hear you on colour management. Honestly still the biggest PITA with modern CSS. The next level of colour support can't come soon enough.

@daveshea BOGOF? When we realised a non trivial number of people react to the word “free” better, regardless of whatever condition it’s attached to.

Please don’t tell me in America it’s been mangled to the utterly non-sensical “Buy One Get One” because that’s a statement, not an offer?!

Zoe Williams (Guardian) thinks Rishi Sunak might actually be trying to lose the election & that sort of makes sense;

The Tories have so wrecked the country that their best bet is to walk away, leave Labour the almost impossible task of clearing up the mess & then in five years time (with the collusion of a supine right wing press) claim Labour have had their chance & the Tories can now save us from the wreckage (without acknowledging its Tory policies that did it)!

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @patrick_h_lauke Honestly why Labour ought to immediately remove first past the post and get proportional representation in.

Remaining as is, what you outline there is a credible threat.

With proportional representation, it’s less likely. But also, it’s going to harm Labour. Because no one likes either party, truth be told.

Labour need to decide if they stand a better chance by ensuring the Tories never get in again, or if they want to risk the status quo.

I am curious if the "announcment" feature Mastodon admins have access to is actually useful.

I suspect many people never see them. I think I've only ever seen it displayed in the "official" mastodon web UI. And never in any of the (many) apps I use.

Feel free to boost for reach.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@tknarr That seems... a design counter to the objective of an Announcement, tbh

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

@brianb That's the sort of behaviour I'd hope to happen for that sort of function, cool.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

So, early result: 59% of people do not see Announcements. Of those people 5% use the normal web UI.

Sure seems like announcements are a failure, and largely because they’re not surfaced well anywhere - but especially poorly in Apps. And a lot of people primarily use apps for Mastodon access instead of the web UI.

Takeaway; the normal mastodon interface is a minority access case now. And Announcements need a re-think everywhere.

Let’s see if the result change significantly; but I doubt it.

mattwilcox,
@mattwilcox@mstdn.social avatar

68% of respondents so far say they mainly use an App.

This doesn’t surprise me, tbh. It has echos of Very Early Twitter; where the driving force for the growth and uptake of the service ended up being third party clients (which the main service stole features from later, and then flat out killed third party apps because they couldn’t compete.)
