If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.

Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

I would posit that there are two societal rules of the Fediverse that differentiate it from other social media outlets:

  1. If you can choose to be anything in this world: choose to be kind; and

Smart but non-mathematically-trained friend was asking about pseudorandom numbers. I gave him a copy of Knuth vol 2 (Seminumerical Algorithms, one of the original three books in his still-unfinished-but-classic Art of Computer Programming series).

A week later he comes back with some impressively deep questions and mentioned what a good and accessible writer Knuth is.

Donald Knuth is a treasure and I hope he continues writing for a long, long time.
