A conversation about automating key lights for meetings, combined with me reviewing some of the “tech things to try” on my Someday list, led to me trying out Hammerspoon, the Lua-based Mac automation tool.

A couple hours later I have much nicer light automation and Zoom mute state tools than I ever had with applescripts and shell scripts! Should’ve looked at this ages ago.

That moment when you need to take the spark plug out of your snowblower… and you know that there is a special socket-thing to take out spark plugs… and you know you have one.. but you have NO IDEA where it is because you haven’t used it in many years… 🤦‍♂️😃

@danyork Keep in mind that your outdoor power equipment and hand tool battery systems won't be interchangeable even if they're from the same brand, so if you wanted to stick with Makita for 18V/20V hand tools and then go with Ego or Snow Joe for 40V/80V outdoor equipment, it would be fine. (I don't think Makita makes snowblowers, lawnmowers and so on anyway.)

@stim3on @dalias @ai6yr Another data point for you: specific cruise ships in Halifax. (Incidentally, the ships in turn let me narrow down the specific date of the aerial photography to October 4, 2016, surprisingly dated!)

I was annoyed at how old our aerial imagery is so I wanted to figure it out, construction around town narrowed down to within a few months, and then the cruise schedule on the port’s website on the Wayback Machine got me the day. I was lucky that there were three ships in that day!

@stim3on @ai6yr @dalias And while we’re the biggest city in the province (and the capital), we’re… not a very big city (at 400k). If it’s manual, the effort is surprising.

How about an abandoned, rusted out oil tank across the harbour, with the rusted-out hole in the side properly rendered? (In fact the entire abandoned refinery appears to be retouched.)

    @mph Try hojicha, which is roasted green tea and is the standard “tea with a meal” tea in and around Kyoto. The roastiness has slight coffee vibes to it but it’s still very much tea. I expected to be served mostly green sencha tea at restaurants but it was a distant second to hojicha!

    Most good tea shops will have hojicha, or if you want to order online you can’t do worse than Ippodo.

    If i wanted “website analytics” for my personal website and blog, but without any kind of sales, funnel, advertising etc. features, what should I look at?

    i’ve always used Google Analytics but it’s (reasonably) business-focused and so like 90% of it is distracting things I don’t need.
