OpenAI is falling apart because we’re near the end of what large language models can do, they are intimately aware, and they are fracturing along the lines of AGI True Believers (spend the next decade on another moonshot breakthrough) versus Business People (spend the next decade returning our investment). That’s my best guess.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@kyle Maybe I'm just cynical but I think there's a huge in between, where they want a return on capital faster because they'll go broke otherwise even if there are still big breakthroughs to be had.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@kyle Complete speculation alert but I think my highest probability case is that AGI is possible, not near (say the next 5-10 years), and being underfunded by people who are prioritizing the short term business case because they don't think they'll make it to the long term outcome. That scenario doesn't imply there's a cliff, but that they wouldn't have reached their goals at OpenAI and would have only become harder over time, hence leaving.

@kyle I will unmanifest this immediately.

I know it's practically a punchline but New York City's trash situation is actually getting a lot better despite having such a trash mayor.

I hate to shill Plinky again before adding more features but from what I gather ProductHunt is still a pretty valuable resource these days, and thanks to @chrismessina Plinky is on ProductHunt today. If you'd like to ask a question or upvote the app, I'd be happy to see you over there today. 🙂 https://www.producthunt.com/posts/plinky

@BenRiceM @chrismessina Yep, but I don't think he's on Mastodon.

@philomath Wow, thank you so much Kerri Ann! That is really kind of you, not only to try Plinky, not only to buy a lifetime license (which I truly appreciate), but also to tell me that you're enjoying the app. I'm very excited to keep working on Plinky — please don't be shy to reach out here or over email to let me know how I can make it better for you.

Doing a hotfix deploy from the 42nd/Bryant Park subway station while I wait for the F like a weirdo because I'm running around between doctors all day, these are the perks of being an indie developer.

@mergesort Im guessing this is a requirement, but when using iPad builds on Mac, you need to sign in with an Apple ID in Settings/on the Mac before you can use Sign in with Apple inside of an app?

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@cameronbanga If I understand correctly yes, its a requirement because Apple ties Sign In With Apple to the Apple ID the device is currently logged into. Do you have a situation like being on a work computer where you can't sign in with the account you signed up with on iOS?

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@cameronbanga That's unfortunate, and a really crummy issue I wish I had a good fix for since I'm dependent on Sign In With Apple. I may add more login options in the future but in the mean time I can suggest Plinky Mini (https://plinky.app/mini) for saving links on your work computer, that doesn't require a login — just a Plinky ID.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@cameronbanga I completely understand that, and thank you for subscribing! Import from GoodLinks/Raindrop/Pinboard is the first feature I'll be working on, there was some post-launch clean up I needed to do so I should start work on that Thursday and expect for it to go pretty quickly since luckily I had the foresight to build the exporter with a matching importer to test the exporter. There are still a few adjustments for me to make, but hopefully it won't be very long.

Now that the Plinky launch is over, the real work to improve the app and service based on everything users have told me they want begins. And I couldn't be more excited.

I turn 3️⃣5️⃣ today, and am doing so on such a high note. You’ve heard me talk a lot about Plinky over the last few days, but I'd like to take a moment to talk about what's made Plinky’s initial success possible, love.

Nothing good in this world happens without the love and care we show each other, I strive to build my life around it. Show love to your friends and family, give love to your community, provide love to strangers, put love into everything you do. Lastly, don't forget to accept love.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

I am forever grateful for the love I have in my life, it's truly special and a product of the love I've given. I woke up today feeling like I had everything and needed nothing.

It's wholly not necessary but if you've enjoyed using Plinky and do want to give me something, I would appreciate a rating and review. Ratings determine the success or failure of an app on the App Store, so if it's not too much trouble, I would really appreciate it. And if not, I still love you.

1/5 For the last two years I’ve been working on Plinky, sharing my work publicly while the app has been in beta.

Today it’s finally ready to go live in the App Store, and I’d like to not only share the app with you but share more about why I built it.

What is Plinky?

@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@eddyg @fillwe That's a great question. Raindrop is a great product, I've been a Raindrop user for years, but personally I think it's more so built for the archivist use case. I'm building Plinky to fit a diversity of use cases, from first save you can see that it saves the link and gets out of your way, rather than focusing on categorization right from the start. That's a perfectly valid approach but with all of the workflows I want to support I felt I needed a clean slate, and built Plinky.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@vik I've had an idea written down for a while to auto-archive links after a specified time period, for example 7, 30, or 90 days. Do you think that's something you'd be interested in?

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@vik When you say specify a date do you mean getting to choose how many days, for example if you wanted the option to make it 17 days for whatever reason? If so that should be reasonably doable too, I just want to make sure that I understand the feature request.

mergesort,
@mergesort@macaw.social avatar

@vik I hadn't considered the idea of a date-specific auto-archive or delete option, you've got me thinking now and I really like it! I wrote all of this down and I like how it could come together, it's not my top priority at the moment but wouldn't be surprised if I get to it later this year. Thanks for the great idea!
