I’ve got a cat-shaped hole in my heart for this (and many others to come).

I know time will make it easier progressively but, in the meantime, it freaking hurts… I also know this hole will never be completely filled, nor will the scars it’ll leave behind ever fade away.

I knew it was going to happen (he had kidney cancer with metastases in the lungs), the question was how long he was willing to fight to stay with us and how selfish I could be until his suffering was too great… I will never know if I made the right decision at the right time. I wish he could have told me what he wanted instead of making that call for him. This is part of why this is so hard: did he want to stay with us longer or was he already too much in pain?

Journée ascenseur émotionnel puisque j'ai été appellée en urgence après la chute du petit d'Alice et Bob. J'ai trouvé le petit mort sous le nid… Mais il s'avère qu'un deuxième petit était présent dans le nid. Je croise les doigts pour lui 🤞

Generative AI epitomizes the worse tendencies of our current society. It’s simply not worth the cost and only benefits a minority when the majority is paying the cost in terms of environmental, societal and mental wellness impacts.

The efforts spent on generative AI would probably be better served on solving actual problems instead of faking human competency but it’d be too easy if that was something techbros could fathom.

@hirad the same constraints apply to open-source models: you still need to train and fix them at enormous cost.
An open-source model is only slightly better in the sense that it’s somewhat less opaque but only marginally so. It doesn’t change the fact that gen AI is applied to wrong problems or what its limitations are, in my opinion.

@JiminyPanoz @emeline @Camille_Poulsard @Elizabeth j'ai été confronté à des patous en VTT en Chartreuse avec personne (sauf les moutons) aux alentours, et clairement, je ne faisais pas le malin!
Se faire grand, pas montrer sa peur et essayer de garder le vélo (si possible) entre le chien et toi, et tracer ta route le plus vite possible en gardant le chien en visu tout le temps (éviter de tourner le dos)!

Promenade orchidées aujourd'hui (Puy-de-Dôme, terrain granitique) ! Seulement deux espèces vues, mais des centaines de pieds en tout. Ici, l'Orchis bouffon (Anacamptis morio) dans trois déclinaisons colorées : violet, rose et blanc

Un Milan noir avait essayé de prendre une de nos poules, une fois mais n’avait pas réussi à l’emporter… on avait eu bien du mal à la soigner mais elle s’était remise.
C’est finalement un goupil qui aura eu raison d’elle… 😥

On a multi-person video call this morning, we were asked what podcasts we listen to.

I didn't get a chance to chime in but here's my answer:

None regularly. I don't have the time, even at fast playback, to listen to something linear that I could scan much more quickly if it was text.

Podcasters, please post transcripts.

I’m becoming more and more resolute on getting a tatoo for my 50th birthday (in June).

As this would be my first one, I thought I’d just pose an open question: is there anything I should think through regarding size, placement or other aspects. Happy to get advice from people more experienced. I expect there are many rookie mistakes to avoid.

The tatoo will be Africa-related and likely involve a map of Africa. So, yeah, I have not decided on the artwork yet.

About xz: fortunately it was an open source software. Imagine if it was close source, imagine if individuals or companies were injecting malicious codes in all their softwares, what a disaster it would be.

Oh. Yeah. It’s sarcasm.

Please don’t blame the open source model. This attack/backdoor has been detected because all softwares were open source. Blame the free volunteer-based economy, that is foundational for large stacks, yup, that’s OK, but not the open source model.

@jdrouet @hywan paying is not going to help… Well, it could but for some of these projects, paying the developer wouldn't help. Some of these projects are hobby projects where maintainers are not interested in spending more time on it and not interested in making it their only project moving forward even if you paid them to basically work full time on them. Money is not buying time or attention. It can help but thinking money is the only issue is wrong, imo.

Now the only question that matters: should I switch my keyboard layout at the same time, or is it a too big step to start with? For the moment, I’ve a boring classic Apple keyboard (which I don’t like, hence the Defy).

@hywan I switched to a Kinesis Advantage Pro 360 a while ago, and it took me quite a while to adjust. In some respect, I still haven't fully adapted but then again, I haven't configured any layers, probably should now, just lazy… :/
