Lovely that the buttons on my Steam Deck have decided to stop working at all (even on the BIOS menu!) right now that I'm out of the house and without access to a keyboard to try and figure out what's going on. I suspect a bogus update, hopefully nothing serious.

@hk rolling updates really are a gift and a curse. 😅
I've been so conditioned by boring work meeting, so I'm always doing stuff in the background.
A few weeks ago, I accidentally ran an upgrade on my desktop during my TTRPG session. Usually there's no problem, but in this case the screen went black and only a reboot would fix it. 😬

@hk I've also learned never to run updates before I start playing.
I have a bunch of Flatpaks installed and whenever there's a Nvidia driver update, it pulls down endless amounts of driver...stuff... 😅
It takes forever and there's a low chance that there's an issue that's either only fixed by a reboot or, in the worst case, only with another driver update. 😬
Seeing my limited gaming time tick down with updates is pretty much the worst possible experience. 😅

Paramount have made an odd decision with their 4K release of Once Upon A Time In The West.

Bill goes into fine detail about the film and why that could cause issues for a digital presentation.

Paramount seems to be saving money and the film has been compressed onto a 66gb disc.

If you have access to the Kaleidoscope service, you can download the film which comes in at 87gb!

Compressing the film by a ⅓ to fit on a disc hasn't helped the quality.

There's probably also not a big market for "new fans". I assume most of the fans already have a copy and only a few of them are interested in upgrading to a 4K release.
But those people especially will notice compression artifacts. 😩
It feels like a mere cash grab, which is insulting to such a great movie, it's fans and in particular the immense and costly restoration efforts that went into this.

It may sound silly, but this actually annoys me a little bit...

I have F2A for my stuff at work, and whenever I'm asked to introduce the code generated by my phone, I get this screen. What's wrong with it? That it specifically talks about Google Authenticator, immediately setting a preference towards one specific app (from Google, no less). I use Aegis Authenticator (free, open source, https://getaegis.app/), at it works perfectly.

Why the need to veer you towards Google apps by default?

@hk @COMPU73E @chris I can't remember exactly, but I think Google cloud sync is rather new.
My main reason for switching to Aegis, besides getting away from Google, was the possibility to export and backup my 2FA configs. 😬
Google Authenticator didn't support that initially and losing my phone would have meant losing all my 2FA codes.
Now I can just remote delete/brick my phone and restore the backup to somewhere else. 🙂

Hundstrasse, to retrogaming

Anyone anything good at the moment? I'm still on my PSP kick playing MGS Peace Walker which I think is going to keep me busy for a while. Especially as I'm not great at it 😶.

So happy I picked up a PSP again though. Such a fun console. I maaayyy have also bought Silent Hill Origins. I think that's probably all the games that I definitely want for it, but any suggestions of hidden gems that I should look out for?

@Hundstrasse @repeatro oh man, that Castlevania game was amazing. It had Symphony of the Night as a secret. The first and only time I played through SotN. Sadly, I think I don't have my copy of Dracula X anymore. 😢

@Hundstrasse @repeatro I enjoyed it back when I found the secret in Dracula X. I was still a teen and on vacation and I pretty much ran through it in a week or so and did everything. 🤩
I remember that it was hard to put down, but I hadn't played too many Metroidvanias at that point. I think it still holds up, but I haven't played it in a long while.

I listened to a podcast about #SuperMarioWorld and that really made me want to pick it back up.
So I did! 🤩
What an amazing game. I wasn't able to appreciate it as a kid, because I wanted the "better looking" Donkey Kong, but SMW has aged much better in comparison. The levels are breezy and I'm already knocking at the doors of castle 3 and 4 (there are some secret levels skipping castle 3).
I only wanted to dip in for a few levels, but I think I'll finish this again.

....which were originally developed for the GameCube, were updated with many of the features that were first implemented in Corruption, such as a new control scheme based on the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. 🎮
Other changes include faster load times, updated textures, bloom lighting, and 16:9 widescreen support. 📺
The credits system from Corruption was incorporated into the first two games. 🏆

@repeatro still haven't finished Metroid Prime. I got up to the final boss when it was released and eventually got the secret hidden ending...a.k.a. I watched it on YouTube. 😅

@repeatro I fully agree, even though I feel like the 2D games have aged a bit better. Precision platforming in Metroid Prime is a pain and going through the same area multiple times can become a chore.
That is kinda true for the 2D Metroids as well, but IMO platforming in 2D is much easier than in 3D and requires less concentration. And most hard platforming areas in e.g. Super Metroid have an easy way around once you've cleared the area and gotten the next upgrade.

Continuing my Cronenberg week, I finally rewatched "A History of Violence" this evening.
I've been meaning to do this for ages. It's still a really good film and comparatively little Cronenberg-esque. 😅
This movie is incredibly tense and just keeps escalating.
Big recommendation.

Now that I am a handful of months away from turning 40, it is true that I look back at the person I was then I was in my 20's and I wince.

But on the other hand, me in my 20s would have probably winced too if he had known the person I am nowadays, so I guess we can call it a draw.

@hk that...spoke to my soul. I'm a bit younger, almost 37, but that is a thought that comes to me every now and then.
I'm quite happy with where I ended up and even in hindsight I'm kinda alright with who I was 15-20 years ago. 🙂

Anyone have ideas for hybrid team celebrations for nerds? I manage a team of 5 engineers, 2 local 3 remote. I need to organize a party of about $50/person. Problem is that they all have completely different interests 😩

@RommelRico we did remote group cooking once as a replacement Christmas party. 🙂
The company paid for all the ingredients and the host and we were lead through how to create an awesome 3 part dinner.

Just watched The Matrix for the first time in a very long time, probably 15-20 years. Still an utterly fantastic film. Everything still holds up very well imo

Loved the very end. Something I never noticed before; Neo is leaving his answerphone message about living in a world without rules or boundaries, as the camera zooms in on the words SYSTEM FAILURE until just the letters M F are visible on screen. Love the Wachowskis

@COMPU73E I think both Matrix Reloaded and Revelations are better if you don't have any expectations.
I didn't like them much when they came out, because they just could not compare to the first movie. But they do explore interesting ideas and I liked them much better when I rewatched them recently. 🙂
I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts about them.

@COMPU73E it's still the worst movie in the trilogy, but I feel a bit different about it.
I absolutely hated it when it came out, but I've grown to accept it and I actually think it's trying something cool, even if it doesn't fully work.
For what it's worth, to me the first movie feels more like a Superhero origin story, whereas Revolutions is the hero at rock bottom. Neo isn't much of a superhero at the end of the movie, he's just barely holding together until it's done. 🙂

@COMPU73E agreed on both points. The real world fight for Zion is the least interesting part of the Trilogy for me, even if it comes with the highest stakes. 😅
Smith really is a single issue voter. He'll drop everything once he sees Neo. The idea with him infiltrating the real world is amazing, but you're right that it boils down to a wet fart. 😩

@COMPU73E my best guess is that "something" happened when Agent Smith tried to infect Neo and that's why Neo can see/feel machinery even when blind and influence machines in the real world.
I did absolutely zero research on that, though. 🤣

The #Turok remaster is really trying my patience.

It's not necessarily a fault of the remaster as much as it is the original game design.

It wouldn't be so bad if they let you save anywhere but having to go through ludacris amounts of tricky platforming right before the Longhunter boss and not letting you save anywhere in that stretch is not fun.

I have died multiple times and restarted this section for the last hour and a half.

This might be where I call it quits...

@Judeau Bawk is incredibly fun to watch whatever he runs. I initially stumbled onto him, because he runs all the old tank controlled Survival Horror games, e.g. classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
If you're into that I fully recommend checking those out too. There's also countless videos on his YouTube channel where he runs RE mods...which...I didn't even know that RE could be modded before. 😅
