So… am I the only one that uses Mastodon with blinders up to the grand concept of the ?

I acknowledge it exists, I like the idea, but… it doesn’t really affect me? I don’t really understand why people feel the need to explain the concept to newcomers, and risk potentially turning them off. People these days need a 5-second sell on things.

I just see Mastodon as a mostly similar, slightly different, successor to Twitter. No reason why it can’t be explained that way.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@tashen I kinda agree. I remember ignoring the "Fediverse" aspect for a few weeks when I joined Mastodon. It took me a while to wrap my head around the way Mastodon worked.
Once I was ready, I started actually reading the Fediverse explainer messages that where floating around. And it was revelatory. I'm still impressed by what is available and it keeps growing and growing.
But I also feel like I got the hang of self-controlling my experience rather quickly, so the explainers didn't bother me.

I'll say it, game graphics are good enough now, we don't need to keep pushing them for this to be the consequence. keep the graphics as they are and focus the next 10y on just improving production pipeline for the existing tech, different game experiences & alleviating crunch.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@djlink I'm with you on that one. In fact I often find Indie games with a distinct aesthetic more visually appealing than anything going for "photorealistic" visuals.
Additionally one of these ages well. I wonder which that could be. 🤔

I'm actually quite pleased with myself. We kinda lost Nick along the way. This time for real. 😅 It was not that spectacular, but funny.
I really wasn't planning to go through the game a second time, but I'm interested in what alternatives different choices will open up.

    At other times I'm bored out of my mind and stop listening after a few minutes, because nothing in that meeting relates to me. I shouldn't have been in that meeting and although we've improved our meeting culture, this still happens regularly. 😩

    Curious! Do you use the inside your or a separate terminal when you use it? 🤔

    mforester,
    @mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

    @parcifal you can also start out with a "mixed" setup, e.g. using Vim/Neovim as a plugin in VSCode. However, to really learn it, I recommend taking off the training wheels. If you're in VSCode anyway, the temptation to go back to the old ways is pretty high. 🙂
    I also spent the time to read through chapters 0-21 of https://github.com/iggredible/Learn-Vim . There's vimtutor or (:Tutor in Neovim) to help get started.
    I forgot most of what I read, but I know where to look and learned the cmds I really need.

    Recent news reveals that Windows Terminal will soon have AI capabilities, thanks to GitHub Copilot. While it may be useful for Windows users, as a longtime Linux desktop user, I personally don't want this feature in my Linux terminal. I am concerned about transferring my data to for-profit corporations like Microsoft or Google. It's important to be cautious about what we wish for. Additionally, I'm confident that I'm still smarter than these AIs ;)Do you want AI in your terminal snooping around?

    mforester,
    @mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

    @birv2 I'm using Hugo, a tool that generates static HTML from Markdown files.
    My website is in a repo on GitHub and I've copied a pipeline that generates and publishes the website on every commit. I'm familiar with Git, Markdown and to a certain extent Go templating, although you don't need that to use Hugo.
    Very much personal preference and YMMV. I find it simple and pleasing to use.
    Incidentally my blog is also rather a digital garden, up to even mixing language between sections. 😅

    Hello, how are you all doing? It's been tough lately. It all started with COVID-19 and the resulting financial crisis. The recession has already begun, and even though some tech companies have plenty of money, they are letting go of employees because of that. Additionally, many jobs in tech, IT, dev stuff, writing/copywriting, and more are being replaced by AI technology. So what new skills are you learning to keep yourself employed for the next 20 years? Please comment below. TIA.

    It's not the graphic or implied violence, I still enjoy that from time to time (on screen), but rather the context which is probably impossible to fix.

    unfriendly reminder that “humans are a parasite on the earth/the earth will heal once we exterminate ourselves“ is ecofascist rhetoric.

    humanity isn’t killing the planet. a small handful of capitalists are. humans lived here in symbiosis with our environs for tens of thousands of years and we can do it again. It is specifically capitalism & settler colonialism and its defenders that insist the current endless cycle of extraction and exploitation is the only way, and they are LIARS

    mforester,
    @mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

    @photophoregirl that's a very good point.
    Next to capitalism, the biggest issue I see is getting people ready to relinquish a bit of their quality of living.
    Right now you can get whatever food you want anytime, travel huge distances in a relatively short time, have light and warmth any time of the day.
    We'll have to give some of these up and going back is gonna be hard on some people. Most people, I'd say.
