smol and cuddly being. like, really smol :neofox_smol: also, heterochromia

i reject most follow requests from people i’ve never interacted with.

the font on my screenshots is a customized variant of iosevka. yes, people have been asking a lot.

blows my mind that some people pay for AWS when it offers less and costs more than 10 dedicated servers with the amount of traffic you may get with something like a file hoster or a popular fedi instance

like, 0x0.st gets 40 TB or more of egress traffic during peak months (and rarely less than 15TB). that’d cost over $3500 with AWS :neofox_googly_shocked:

reminder to set up your own dns resolver if you can (e.g. unbound)

the first lookup of a host name can be a bit slower with a recursive resolver like that, but it’s more trustworthy and reliable than your ISP’s, cloudflare, quad9, google etc.

if you’re not running e.g. openwrt on your router or have a pi-hole setup (those have their own guides), but you’re using linux, you can probably just install unbound and enable+start the system service, then put 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf (or networkmanager connection settings, or whatever else you’re using).

at least on opensuse, no further configuration is required for most setups.

i bring this up because somebody mentioned 0x0.st timing out for the last few days, which was fixed by going to 1.1.1.1/purge-cache and purging all 0x0.st records (which haven’t actually changed in over a year)

the zen of video encoding is realizing that grain is good actually, at least if your encoder software has good rate control and psy optimizations

it masks artifacts and loss of detail

the tall screen aspect ratio of the xperia 10 mk2 is nice for reading fedi but a real pain to use one-handed with anything that isn't gesture-based like most of sailfish OS

would not enjoy this phone with android

if you’re on hetzner infra and have a report filed against you:

  • comply with demands unless they are entirely unresonable. do not argue unnecessarily.
  • clarify what kind of site you are running. in particular, that the content in question is either uploaded by a user or comes from another part of the network, and that the site is not intended specifically to host such content.
  • state that you have implemented measures to moderate content on your site, and that proper channels for reporting offending posts exist.
  • have rules/ToS listed on your site

it’s not the end of the world

i was a little happier when i assumed safety-critical systems would continue to run on isolated RTOS’s with multiple watchdogs to trigger emergency resets

seattle tap water was the nastiest i’ve ever drunk. it smells bad and has chlorine in it. dries out your skin and destroys your hair

none of the people i talked to could tell but i know they serve it in restaurants completely unfiltered. in germany it wouldn’t even meet regulations for potable tap water (which are less strict than those for restaurants etc.)
