I'm apparently not a woman because I'm childfree.

I'm apparently not a woman who's a student because I'm in my late 50s.

I'm apparently not a woman in STEM because I'm disabled.

And now I'm apparently not a woman in STEM because I'm a Masters student rather than a PhD student.

Please stop excluding Masters students from grad school events. "PhD" is not synonymous with "grad school".

Was just thinking again, this time on of how many times men have represented my ideas as their own, taken my ideas & work without permission (uncredited and unpaid), and how they've faced zero consequences for it. In fact, they advance and get paid more while I fall down the ladder and get paid less. (My pinned tweet is just one example.)

Don't just hire more women. Kick out this type of man - make them pay consequences for unethical actions.

Inspired by Biotweeps, do any of the biology folks here want to work on putting together an accessible online conference using Fediverse tools?

I'm thinking anti-ableist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, etc.

I, like many disabled scientists, have been left out of so many workshops, symposia, conferences, etc. due to inaccessibility. Especially since the pandemic began.

I think we could build some community on Mastodon.

@plantscience Actual inclusive as possible for us to achieve online conference-planning. Pushing the date far enough out that we can do this without stressing the hell out and with enough time to fundraise for ASL interpreters, captioning, etc.

    My favorite way of doing fieldwork.

    @ucaccessnow approached UC Green New Deal several times about the accessibility issues that keep disabled students & others from being able to use our sustainable transit on campus, but they turned a cold shoulder.

    Regardless of their pretty dedicated ableism, I'd still recommend joining their campaign to get University of California to cut down on greenhouse gases. http://ucgreennewdealcoalition.net/ @academicchatter

    A lot of what the university is currently using huge pickup trucks and gas-powered John Deere carts to do could be done with fewer GHGs by using a cargo quadricycle line mine.

    When I see large, heavy gas-powered vehicles being used in the field, more often than not they are not carrying any more equipment than what I could carry in the

    This compresses the soil less, too.

    @Gurre @plantscience Folks need to speak up about it more often. When I speak alone, I get written off as a "crank", but when people speak together it's taken more seriously.

    We have an obligation to move swiftly on steps to reduce greenhouse gases. I agree that much in ag/hort and landscaping can be done with human-powered and e-assist vehicles. Leave only the heaviest stuff to be done by automobiles (although we should be bringing back draft animals as well, IMO).

    Good news, bad news.

    The late Munger was going to make a large donation to UCSB...as long as they built Dormzilla to his specifications.

    $40 million donation, but fellows will still be charged rent.

    Reading of the many specimen trees that are on the proposed site, I cannot help but think that if The Huntington wanted to really show some leadership, they'd build on the parking lot instead.

    The parking lot also has accessions, but the space given over to automobile storage is more than wide enough to fit housing between those trees. Reserve & expand disabled parking. Expand accessible cycle racks. Get local transit agencies to run many convenient routes to The Huntington. @parkingreform

    ml,
    @ml@ecoevo.social avatar

    Building housing on what is currently non-disabled auto parking would be a much better solution for the climate as well as for immediate habitat considerations at The Huntington. And it would preserve specimen trees.

    The Huntington is a big enough political player to transform public transit in that area, which would be another service to humanity.

    Sadly, although the pandemic has not ended, institutions have largely ended online accessibility.

    It's a relief to have something botanical happening over Zoom.

    It is depressing to me how little time it's taken for neoliberal Reaganites to groom people into thinking of public universities as a "business".

    For those of us who remember a higher standard and/or those of us up on our history, never give up the ship. Educate people and counter the neoliberal narrative that public universities, public libraries, national postal services, etc. should be "run like a business".

    Does anyone know the keywords to use to find researchers who work on how societies emerge from periods of chaos and injustice to periods of democracy, order and better justice (than previously)?

    I feel like it's easier to find research on how societies fall into chaos than how they surmount greed & chaos to become more democratic...

    ml,
    @ml@ecoevo.social avatar

    @seanfobbe Thank you.

    I'm hoping to find historians who look at periods where more democratic order emerged, like the Progressive Era in the US or the shift in the Nordic Countries from severe religious 19th c. to the foundation of democratic socialist agreements...

    I think there's a lot about breakdown of the Roman Empire, breakdown of Weimar, but not as much about the periods where people overcame..
