Goddammit Thiago and my lad Joel both announcing they’re leaving . Bot unexpected but terrifically sad all the same.

@franksting I already greatly miss Matip's loping, probing runs forward and his head slap celebrations.

And I loved the way Van Dijk regards him with such joy. At times gently teasing and other times with honest reverence and brotherhood.

Such a brilliant, yet odd duck. He cannot be replaced.

Finished "Translation State" by Ann Leckie, a nominee for Best Science Fiction for Goodreads in 2023.

I came into it without having any knowledge of the Imperial Radch trilogy and it works as a standalone book. It's a bit of a space opera, a bit of a fairly predictable & angsty love story, and a bit of political intrigue. It's kind of a bit of everything and I think that's why I liked it but didn't love it. 4/5 stars. #Bookstodon

@Nonya_Bidniss I enjoyed Leckie's writing, and I really liked the three main characters. I just thought overall it was a bit messy... a Swiss-army knife when we really just wanted a fork.

I think I'll look at the Ancillary series, as I saw other positive reviews for it when looking at what others thought of Translation State.

Good morning peeps:)

Well, it seems today is PB Day, not that I set out to do PB, or PR as Strava calls it. (same thing) I knew I'd gone off a bit quick for 5k, but I was cool with that, because I thought, I'll just tap the brakes a bit as I run to 10k, obviously not tapped hard enough because I set a PB for 10k, then it started raining, so my new shoes got a proper test, and I felt steady, stable with no slipping as the surface got greasy, good shoes:) #running #motivation #runnersofmastodon

Screenshot of personal records set for today PR for 10K 1:19:44 7.58 /km PR for 5K 37.06 7.25 /km PR for 2 mile 23.30 7.18 /km

Things have been hectic at home. Tonight was my first run in a week and just the second in two weeks. Both terrible outings. My legs were so dead I couldn’t continue. Super frustrated and down.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@s1m0n4 Yes. I'm constantly waking up throughout the night. Stress-induced, for sure, and I'm struggling. I know it will get better... I'm ready for it!

@tecoholic appreciated! Hopefully we can both be back to it before too long. 🤜 🤛

@obrien_kat thanks! I'm optimistic, overall, but it's tough right now. Exhausted physically and emotionally is spot on.

Didn’t expect the self-immolation, although in hindsight, I don’t know why. It fits perfectly in the theme of the last few months. The mentality monsters are long gone.

Was surprised to see a fluke gifted-goal and thought maybe our luck had turned. We give them up, not get them. And so, naturally the football gods see to it that Villa get a fluke caromed goal. On brand.

So many mental errors and fatigued players on fumes.

We had better pound Wolves. #LFC

Having to time-shift until later tonight. I know it's a game that doesn't matter, but I'd like to see them play well and Klopp enjoy his final two games. 🤞

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@Lee6 City, mostly because I think they are better than Arsenal.

I have a LOT of issues with City’s ownership and financial shenanigans, but on the field they mostly play beautifully and I love watching KDB.

And when Arsenal strategized to play dull football at the Etihad and force a joyless splitting of the points, it showed me they feared playing openly. They knew they would likely lose. I like the strongest team to win.

Lastly, I know it will bring you joy and that will make me happy. 🍻

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@Lee6 he is amazing. Hits at least on pass per game that just seems inhuman. Seems a class guy too.

It started with a couch-to-10k challenge last summer, and somehow I have managed to 500 kms in the last one year. This is the first time in my life I've run so much, and I’m very proud of it. Hoping to run even more this year.

Oh and I also walked 450 kms in the last year.

I've been training for my 1st marathon! I picked a 16 week training plan, and then picked a marathon to race at that was 16 weeks from that - the Brisbane Marathon. 3 weeks to go and feeling nervous! I've followed the plan religiously and I feel fit. Fitter than I've ever been (obviously).

It's funny how things escalated. 4 years ago a 5km run was tough. 2 years ago, first 10km, last year was 2 half-marathons (21km), so a full 42km was the next obvious goal. 🙃

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@mattb you've just listed a great foundation and overall trend. Every reason to think you'll do great!

Friday:
102 seconds of plank
11 minutes of yoga for runners
30 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes of strength training
25 KM of (8°C).

The HIIT workout really was tough today; a bit too fast for me, but I managed.

The ride was nice enough. Did have a pickup truck parked in the cycle track on Laurier though. Don't think they too much of me dinging at them.

HR just kept rocketing up, surely the consequence of a mostly sleepless night. Cut it off early in defeat. Live to run another day…

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@s1m0n4 I’m pretty certain it’s a lack of sleep. I’ve been concerned for a family member and haven’t been able to sleep well at all for a couple of weeks now.

When I’ve had similar wildly variant HR struggles in the past, it was always the day after too little sleep. Definitely fits here. (He types, yawning 🥱)

This is tricky. I’d love for Klopp to win a third time , and you could make an argument, but really Unai Emory has to win from this list.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@BillSaysThis sometimes it really is as simple as predicted finish vs actual finish. Doesn't detract from the solid work by Arteta, Guardiola, and Klopp to acknowledge that Emery and Iraola have massively outperformed.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@vruz @BillSaysThis sure, I could easily be persuaded. The signings of Rice and Havertz were excellent, especially figuring out how to unlock Havertz.

But getting Raya on loan for so cheap is the steal nobody really talks about. They'd not be pushing City without his standout performance.

Restarted today and my right knee and ankle and utterly fucked.

Left knee has healed and is doing well, just a bit stiff but that felt like a tendon from knee to hip issue.

My right knee feels like an ankle and knee issue and it's also the ankle I sprained quite badly last summer and has been weak since. And unlike the left knee, running on it has definitely made it worse. Also the inside of my knee feels bruised.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@alexisbushnell sorry to hear it, but good to have a diagnosis. Wishing you a speedy recovery! 🤞
