I recently found and like the term "threadiverse" for reddit-like federated software

Is there a way to create Super Communities?

I've noticed in the explosion that we are getting duplicate communities in multiple instances. This is ultimately gonna hinder community growth as eventually communities like 'cats' will exist in hundreds of places all with their own micro groups, and some users will end up subscribing to duplicates in their list....

Ideally you'd want 3-4, but 300.

Could potentially be hundreds though, and puts a lot of work on users to look around for the best one -> most likely the communities in bigger instances will win out.

How is rust more memory efficient than c or c++?

I like this significantly better than Mastodon

My experience with the Fediverse has only been through Mastodon, through which I struggled to find a community I really gelled with. Either it was supper overwhelming with meme posts or NSFW, or it was too chill to the point of nothing. Or, it was hyperfocused like FOSS/Linux and became uninteresting after awhile. May try again,...

Matrix is federated, but only within itself. The realtime messages would flood the normal fediverse.

There's only two apps right now, mlem for ios, jerboa for android. Both in early stages of development.

a megathread for developments on Reddit and with third-party Reddit apps

just so this doesn't overwhelm our front page too much, i think now's a good time to start consolidating discussions. existing threads will be kept up, but unless a big update comes let's try to keep what's happening in this thread instead of across 10....

I doubt it, as that would allow almost every third party app to be exempt.

What does bill gates have anything to do with this

morrowind,

Should be fine if we can get a setting to have no bots respond to you unless you summon them

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Nice, wonder if it works on desktop too. I've had to use an extension so far.

Oh wait, just saw the other post

Yeah if someone is leaving reddit, makes sense they'd want to use up any coins they have left.

It's not really a good comparison to use the value of gold on earth for Smaug's wealth, you have to use the value of gold in middle earth, which is likely higher.

OoO, I like , was never fond of how the whole fediverse is mashed together.

The whole imaginary network is gorgeous. I wonder if we could convince them to work here as well.

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

...I think you did. It's been semi-ironically a compliment since forever

morrowind,

It's much nicer though, lemmy is not designed to be addictive so it's much easier to not waste time on it.

It's just temporary hype. Things should settle down eventually, though never all the way down to where they were. pagination, no karma or rewards, no agressive notifications, etc. all mean lemmy is a far healthier platform than Reddit.
