It’s not like he handed them to a stranger at a train station or sold them to the highest bidder. He carefully sought out a trustworthy investigative journalist from the most trustworthy and reputable broadcaster in the country. A public one mind you, without a pure profit motive and stringent ethical guidelines.

The military is not an impartial or objective body either. They are just as politically active as the police with their own self serving goals.

Yeah nah, the highest calling is ensuring integrity. Everything else must come second to that or there will be none, and if the military cannot conduct itself in a trustworthy manner then it cannot be trusted and loses the privilege of secrecy.

If individual soldiers are endangered then it is the military who endangered them, not the person blowing the whistle.

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

I feel like the licensing in Australia is in generally pretty good (sometimes it’s bonkers reactionary in terms of what gets banned).

Rifles you can get levers and bolt action. They fire plenty fast enough for whatever you want to do with them recreationally.

Handguns are licenceable but it’s strict as fuck. Expensive club membership, regular training/competing events (community + keeping skills and culture good), 6 month probationary period with only supervised shooting, another 6 months before you can buy your own, have to have a rock solid safe bolted to the floor inspected initially and randomly (every few years realistically). Seems completely reasonable, handguns exist to put holes in paper and kill humans, plus they’re highly concealable and much harder to use.

How often have you just read a headline? It’s not about creating cases that stand up to scrutiny, it’s about creating the impression of a movement.

Nudging people by making things appear more reasonable than they otherwise would be.

Happiest I’ve ever been at work has been fixing and cleaning things that needed it.

The thing that always stopped it was the inhumane work conditions and lack of respect. If you’re happy to treat me as an equal, and make me a cup of tea when I take a break to stretch my back and knees I’ll do the dirty shitty work for you.

If you want me to work to the point of damaging my body and then raise your voice at me if you see me taking a damn breather then we’re gonna have a problem.

This is a joke right? Like those jobs are grueling as fuck and require very particular people to be interested/capable.

Everything is hard but very few people have still enough hands to even be considered neurosurgeons or an interest in using meth in order to perform the insane surgeries (need to stay awake and concentrate). Further few are capable of dehumanising people enough in order to be able to cut into them.

Plenty of people are interested in enough things to cover them but neurosurgery at least is almost life destroying in what it demands. I’ve never met anyone entirely whole that’s a neurosurgeon, so it’s kinda weird to imagine people would want to flock to it and we wouldn’t have enough people happy to do other work.

It’s kinda funny, I’m over here exercising for 1-2 hours every day, taking benzos about once a week, and ketamine infusions monthly just to not set myself on fire in a public square or something pointlessly melodramatic and people are like “Tut Tut, coffee is a serious vice”

There have been some experimental trials run. As someone with an absolutely winning smile and lifelong depression I got in the program at one point.

Ran out of money though, very expensive. Of course first hand experience is an invaluable way to learn anything if you ask questions and watch carefully.

Hi, I’m shit at brushing my teeth long enough/regularly enough. I am glad fluride is in the water.

Hi I’m someone who has concerns about animal testing and is sensitive to SLS causing mouth ulcers/generally ruining taste for a while, unfortunately hippy toothpaste often lacks fluride for insane reasons. I am glad fluride is in the water.

Hi I’m a kid with horrible parents that neglect my dental care. I am glad fluride is in the water.

“Just let people hurt themselves” is never that easy.

Do you talk to people like this in real life?

Hornsby is the fifth best place to live in Australia, apparently.

At least, according to a study SGS Economics and Planning:

"Sydney's Northern beaches ranks as the highest in the nation for wellbeing, with only one Queensland city making it to the top 10, the annual index revealed today.

"The Australian Capital Territory came in second due to its low gender wage gaps, climate change risks and the division of wealth."

The study assessed 518 local council areas on seven indicators:

  • economy
  • income and wealth
  • employment, knowledge and skills
  • housing
  • health
  • equality, community and work-life balance
  • environment

The top 10 local government areas are:

  1. Northern Beaches (Greater Sydney)

  2. Australian Capital Territory

  3. North Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  4. Ku-ring-gai (Greater Sydney)

  5. Hornsby (Greater Sydney)

  6. Lane Cove (Greater Sydney)

  7. Mosman (Greater Sydney)

  8. Sutherland (Greater Sydney)

  9. Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  10. Brisbane (Greater Brisbane)

wtf? Hornsby is a shithole isn’t it? At least it was when I lived in the hills ~10 years ago. you have to drive most places, the Westfield is a nightmare that ate the old arcades and small businesses, basically nothing to do except shop, crap food.

Its redeeming characteristics were being close to Eastwood and Epping for some actual stuff going on. Also trains into the city were clean.

Idk what this list is though, the northern beaches is also peak, cultureless, suburban hell.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just sydney in general is a bit how’s it going but like compared to chatswood, paramatta, the inner west etc which are similar in terms of degree of builtuppedness Hornsby is worse in all metrics except maybe quality of schools?

you can’t get around, there’s no culture, no sense of community, no… anything. It’s the beige blandness that appeals only to bougie people afraid of anything unexpected that think the height of living is ordering your life out of a catalogue.

naevaTheRat, (edited )
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think if you shop at Davey Jones and even considers private schools you’re the sort of bougie bland person that horrifies me so haha.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Keep in mind our categories are pretty arbitrary. We have stuff like semimetals and so on. All bonding has multiple characteristics outside of extremes, e.g. covalent bonds with dipole character.

Metals are just our name for the broad category of bonding between extremes at conditions we usually find on earth where we live. They are soft squashy bonds that are kinda slutty because they’re just sort of average.

Actually within the metals we see some pretty different characteristics, especially with D orbital chemistry stuff but because of inertia we just keep these things all in the same category of metals because shiny squishy was a lot more obvious than fucky wucky complexing when people named them.

Yep, totally evil authoritarianism. No excuses, this is a clear act of tyranny.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Hang on hang on hang on. Is this cartoonist saying that lgbt people ought to want extermination of people who don’t support us (just taking at face their stance that there are no lgbt supporters in Palestine)?

Isn’t this like… what they’re terrified of?

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Right yeah but they’re saying queer people should want that because (in the cartoonists mind) Palestinian people would want us dead.

But the sort of people who are the audience of this want us dead too, so is the cartoonist saying we should be trying to kill them? That just seems intense.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I suppose there’s a consistent logic to it in the mind of one of those “just saying the hard truths, being realistic” cookers.
