Despite all my rage I’m still a rat refreshing this page.

I use arch btw

Credibly accused of being a fascist, liberal, commie, anarchist, child, boomer, pointlessly pedantic, and db0’s sockpuppet.

Pronouns are she/her.

Vegan for the iron deficiency.

The cost does not include other AI products like GPT-4 and DALL-E2. Right now, it si pulling through only because of Microsoft’s $10 billion...

Imagine having so much fucking wealth that you can piss away a few million on ridiculous thought bubble companies on the off chance one becomes huge and your staggering wealth can become mind boggling nation destroying wealth. Just… because?

I’m constantly surprised at the general public’s ignorance of the conditions of farming and simultaneous confidence that vegans are extremist loons.

I’m not shitting here shitting on GNOME but I haven’t tried it since gnome 3 released.

I got kinda stuck on tiling wms because I hate having to think about laying out windows and so this blog post is exciting! They’re very correct that tiling wms only partially solve the problem because you often have to tweak for proper line length or just deal with random void space in settings apps.

Obviously mosaic isn’t in yet, but if I wanted to dip into GNOME can it do (or are there addons or alternative more efficient things to try) for the following:

  • snappy keyboard only application launching e.g. dmenu style.
  • a way to activate a tiling wm mode for when you’re doing something like software Dev or at least a way to save and lock particular layouts?
  • tell software to always open on a particular monitor?
  • manipulate windows without using the mouse + move focus to different screens without using the mouse?
  • display a string in the status bar (I assemble my status bar using a custom shell script which outputs a string. I’d like to not reinvent it)

Cause reading this blog I’m kinda keen to see where they take GNOME and get in early so it’s easier to learn.

Like I said, I last used GNOME 2 so it’s been a while and I’m sure in my head it’s unfairly judged.

If you don't mind me asking what is so important about privacy?

What harm does public data have to you? Couldn’t one just ignore the ads? You can’t see anyone watching you, is public data good for public records? (I’m just curious). I know this sounds weird but is public data good for historical preservation and knowledge increasing the importance of the individual? And does public...

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Let’s flip it. Why do people want data on you? why are people willing to pay for it? or governments deploy threats of fines (backed up by men with guns) or men with guns in order to force it’s collection on you?

private companies feel like they can make money with it, that they can make you do things that are profitable (buy something you wouldn’t, vote a certain way, decide against insuring you etc). Are you cleverer than teams of academics? I’m not.

Governments want it to enhance control. Sometimes that control can be benevolent but it’s still control. Often it’s not benevolent, selective enforcement of unjust laws against political opponents etc.

So why surrender privacy?

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

clearly I haven’t because I don’t follow :p could you elaborate please?

Yep

Do you think that the pro meddling in the middle east voters in the world trade centre that day deserved to die like that?

Genuinely, I don’t. I don’t think average citizens, even really fucking shitty and ignorant ones, deserve capital punishment for the crimes of those that claim dominion over them.

If they’re such mindless brutes that they need to be handled and engaged with in the same way you would handle a rabid animal then maybe, just maybe, it’s the cops fault?

You’re talking about needing to exhibit some specific set of behaviours while some heavily armed cunt lays hands on you or they’ll beat you up.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Hey what if though, what if, bear with me here, what if the people trained and paid and heavily armed like didn’t startle at loud noises and beat you up for calling them racist?

No way I’m listing myself as trans on a census so I’m easy to find when the flavour of the month changes

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

sure but like 2 doctors had to legally grope me to affirm my birth cert change which in itself is a eugenics program. Forgive my distrust.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

sure, hand over your kids. I’m hungry!

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No I’m serious. Commit to your own ideology. I want to kill and eat your children, you’re not allowed to judge me or try and stop me.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh yeah, you can eat whatever fruit and veg you want that’s no issue.

No desktop environment. suckless dwm. xmonad breaks all the time, i3wm is a nightmare with its config and status bar that sucks. dwm has problems, it’s not the easiest to customise and stuff.

It’s fast though, dmenu is the best launcher objectively, the status bar is something you literally just pass a string to via a script in xprofile.

how's your week going, Beehaw

hello Beehaw, it’s a sleepy morning–and i did not get very much sleep. luckily i have no social priorities so this is not a big deal. currently reading a number of books after completely crashing out of doing that for the entire month of June. i think i can get about 3 in before the end of the month, we’ll see

Not exactly the same but my grandmother had a stroke that left her unable to care for herself although mostly mentally intact. She was miserable and never adjusted. It was hell, and everyone was relieved when she died. I know that sounds horrible but there was nothing we could do to ease her suffering.

All I can really say is that brain injuries are awful, even if things turn out as well as they can the road there is going to be hell. Remember to take care of yourself, you’ll have days of grief and anger when you think thoughts you’re not proud of. Do not judge yourself too harshly, or your family.

You will need time and space to grieve and it’s going to be very hard to get that at the moment. Try to make space when you can, and understand that everyone else needs that too. You will need support, your friends and extended family might avoid bring your mum up believing that it spares you suffering to avoid thinking about the situation. You might need to be quite explicit with your needs around emotional support, conversations, venting, and advice.

I am sorry, my heart goes out to you. Generally the prognosis for brain injuries isn’t good, and it’s probably best to set expectations around that to avoid self blame and another round of grief if things don’t improve. That said stimulation is important for brain healing, particularly early on. Try to chatter, ask questions etc even though you might not get a response. Play music she likes, try to do things around her/in view. Try physical therapy stuff if she’s mobile. Even gentle movement of limbs by another person can help prompt re-connection of neural pathways.

Good luck

The kind of person who reads 30 minutes a day for 20 days straight. That’s not really so bad, you’re outreading the vast majority of people there.

I would recommend David Graeber or however it’s spelled writing. Any time you read anyone’s opinion take it with a grain of salt but Debt and Bullshit Jobs address many things, some of which can be taken as criticism of capitalism.

James C Scott is another anthropolgist and his most accessible book is probably seeing like a state. It’s relatively even handed in it’s critques of capitalism as it focuses on states including the USSR. It highlights quite well how markets and states can crush humanity because they have wildly different goals to people.

You probably don’t want to jump right into hardcore theory so this might be a gentler intro into asking why society is the way it is and how it might be different without expressly pushing a particular political theory.

Crashes are actually a shitload more complicated than that. Impulse is a big deal and then you have to factor in the meat geometry of a human and the specialness of various bits of meat.

Don’t throw scientifish nonsense around. Just say big car scary make get big car.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

We bought an electric recently. Was very upset to have to choose the Kona in order to fit 2 tall people and 2 big dogs. It’s a great car but being realistic there’s no need for it to be so big.

It seems like the styles now being sold are small hatchback, sedan, and everything else is SUV. Very disappointing to see there’s not much middle ground lile the station wagon space or slightly larger hatchbacks. Especially with EVs. Most of my trips are like 40 km at most. I don’t need 500 km range with a full car…

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah absolutely. This silly car doesn’t even have enough room for a suitcase and the dogs in the back but it’s a good head an shoulders above my dad’s holden station wagon.

Part of that is the battery sure (maybe the head part) a lot is also ground clearance. I need a bit of ground clearance sure but we used to manage with firm suspension just fine. If it’s shaking the crap out of you just drive slower. No need to tear down lumpy roads at 80 km/h unless you’re actually a farmer.

We are also talking 2 big greyhounds and 2 six foot people, one with back problems that prevent a more reclined seating position, living in the blue mountains. We’re not your average family. This stuff is marketed to average urbanites who defs need to be able to fit an entire Holiday’s worth of luggage and their whole family on those red pavement roads they take to the school in the morning?

Surely there’s room for more practical stuff ffs.

Ours has the rack. Unsure on effect on range but I just did sydney to Canberra easily with one stop I needed to take for concentration anyway.

I’ve never had a roof rack before, where to look for a sturdy one that’s aerodynamic for the car? It’d be good for a holiday
