A lot of comments are questioning Trumps appeal after listening to him talk, but I think I understand why he’s appealing to his base and I think that it’s the same reason many are finding Biden a repellant: people are mired in uncertainties about their futures, their families futures and that of things they thought were tried and true (work hard, get job, get house and raise family). People like how Trump sounds certain and sure and strong, even if some of them don’t like what he’s saying. They want someone certain and sure to lead them when they’re feeling uncertain. The counter to Trump is to use reassuring and strong language for similar themes (job security, inflation, climate, housing, migrants, health). Or at least I think so, I could be wrong.

As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

Bandcamp is nice, they have a curated genre section that updates frequently. College radio stations as someone mentioned, then just Shazam or whatever or look at their playlist online. I hate Spotify because it just gives you pop shit and doesn’t do anything niche or indie. There’s also SoundCloud, they make curated playlists of new stuff frequently. Sound cloud also has labels on there which curate some of their newest bands. It’s super easy to find niche indie labels I think. Lastly, look at lineups of local music spots. I used to listen to Deezer for finding non-US artists, but haven’t used it in a while since Bandcamp is kinda great about covering everywhere.

He could be signaling to some cult or secret society that he will literally let them eat people if he wins (/s)

Or he’s signaling to his base that they should go all Brevik and kill brown and black people (not /s)

Or he has dementia (also not /s)

There are many options, but the “easiest” one which comes to mind is to cap CEO pay at some value, like 2 mil say, and increase wages for lowest earners to a living wage. This is effectively moving the same money around, so shouldn’t really result in inflation, but I am not an economist.

Secondly, the nature of reality requires caps on expected profit margins, and shareholder expectations need to be adjusted. If people expect unmitigated growth, then they need to open up to exploring the universe (literally). Given that the universe is boundless, all our calculus based on resource limitations will need to change.

Wait, copilot and ChatGPT use are skills? Isn’t that a bit like how using a phone is a skill?

The gender stuff is just a distraction from the resource hoarding and exploitation of the working class. The people in positions of authority or power (like 0.0001%) don’t really care about their religious “beliefs” etc. or whatever else drives them to say they care about gender neutral bathrooms. The only real belief for such 0.0001 percenters is self preservation.

But there definitely are useful idiots in the lower ranks who are manipulated using religion to pretend they’re all somehow morally superior while they’re being cowardly or petty.

Louisiana Supreme Court Makes It Harder For Church Abuse Survivors to Hold Priests Accountable (ballsandstrikes.org)

. . . Enter the Louisiana Supreme Court. In an opinion written by Justice James Genovese and published on March 22, the court found an absolute property right in the institutions’ right not to be sued. The Louisiana Child Victims Act, wrote Genovese, “cannot be retroactively applied to revive plaintiffs’ prescribed causes...

The end of democracy in the U.S. is not going to come from fascist conservatives, but from too-busy-with-life normies, the type who don’t vote in anything but presidential elections. They’re just too busy to notice anything other than their bills.

In their minds, they’re going to “punish” the blues for inflation while ignoring that the reds only ever made them poorer. These type of people don’t care about genocides (someone else’s problem, there’s always brown people dying, Israel is an ally etc), abortion rights (only stupid people get pregnant or only sluts need that), or trans people (that’s too weird for them). They don’t care about climate change (it’s a topic up for debate, it’s not factual), but have kids. They don’t care about workers rights, but work deadend or multiple jobs. They don’t care about getting more healthcare rights, but are a medical emergency away from bankruptcy.

I am not saying these people are dumb or callous, they need outreach and they need to be presented clearly with their options and outcomes. If you can, volunteer to sign people up to vote and present what’s at stake.

How is macOS hipster? Apple products are so damn popular.

nifty,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

Hmm idk man, anything that has ads playing everywhere 24/7 is not hipster, hipster is unknown, but stylish etc. Hipster is more trendsetter and macOS is not a trendsetter, it’s just a trend at this point. Anything pop by definition is not hipster.

To give a pithy example: macOS is to tech hipsters what hot topic is to goth hipsters

Name and shame: Pro-Israel website ramps up attacks on pro-Palestinian student protesters (www.reuters.com)

Canary Mission is one of the oldest and most prominent of several digital advocacy groups that have intensified campaigns to expose Israel's critics since the war broke out, often leading to harassment such as Sayed experienced. The people behind the site have kept their identities, location and funding sources hidden....

You know what’s nastier? Taking the right to abortion away from women. But I am sure if a woman from the ruling class got pregnant for some reason, then she’ll just a hush hush abortion like in the good old days.

All you gotta do is wear tight shoes while running so you give yourself runners toe, and your toenails fall off. They’ll grow back in 1-2 months, easy peasy. You’re welcome.

I hate to give advice, but I feel bad for anyone who feels they’re an involuntary celibate. Like, being celibate or aroace is fine because you’re just being yourself. But the “involuntary” aspect of incel/femcel makes me feel bad for anyone going thru this.

So here’s what I suggest: super get into a hobby, be a nerd and specialist in it, and just enjoy yourself. Don’t do it to meet anyone, and stop comparing life to others. It’s just life, just have fun. The lack of sex shouldn’t be a defining quality to life or personality, a person is more than someone else’s love or interest.

But note one important thing! I am not saying people are boring or lacking anything, and that’s why they’re not getting love, attention, sex etc. I am saying one can use the hobby to alleviate the frustration that comes from something that one can’t control.

I think the anger and sadness people feel from a lack of love and attention should be reframed: dating, love etc. all have such a luck aspect to them, and so I don’t think anyone not getting any should feel like it’s their fault or they’re not enough. You’re just fine, the society we’ve created just makes it easier for some type of people vs. others, but it’s a work in progress and we can all be the change we want to see in the world.

Sorry for the Ted talk

Nothing against this or other stoic ideas, but if you’re the only “enlightened” one while everyone around you is a reptile who is out for themselves, then you just end up a chewed up loser.

People like the Dalai Lama are losers in the conventional sense. How much of international policy (of any country) is determined from the teachings of Dalai Lama? Or at a smaller scale, how much of your immediate environment is determined from such principles? Every place is different, but the defining characteristics of any dominating force in history has been injustice, unfairness, and violence (on some level). It’s sad but true, doesn’t mean it can’t be different tho
