First time in many years that I've shaved my face, and I didn't even draw blood!

Those of you who know me or have seen pictures know I've had a 1--3mm beard'ish for a long time.

I'm having my throat slit† open in surgery tomorrow morning for a complete removal of the thyroid gland so I thought I'd spare a nurse some trouble and take a stab at cleaning away the hair.

No thoughts and prayers please. I'll report back here if and/or when I survive

@jpmens just checked with Gemini and I am so insignificant it declines to reply... Kagi FastGPT is reasonably accurate other than believing that I am High Sheriff of Lincolnshire and confusing me with a geneticist. No rumours of my death

Sometimes Amazon bemuse me - look at the attached screenshot of an email… They have changed the release date of a book I have pre-ordered, and so written to inform me of the new release date…

So what single piece of information would you expect them to include in the email?

I can tell you the new release date is not in any part of the email they sent!

    It is still very weird to ship an app that I've only run on a device for a handful of hours back in August.

    At least it’s basically just 2D (hidden bananas aside) - my hat is off to anybody that's shipped a full 3D app today, that's much harder to pull off developing in the simulator.

    And congratulations to the Apple people who have been working on this stuff for literally years!

    Local virgin media cabinet has been vandalised and is hanging open.

    It appears to report it I have to sign up for an account, which is a much higher bar to entry than I feel inclined to climb… especially as a non Virgin customer.

    I'm a long-time Linux user, and I've started using Windows 11 for work and…

    It's basically fine?

    There are no adverts in it that I can see. Multi-monitor support works. Lots of the deeper settings still retain their Win98 look & feel. Window snapping isn't quite as advanced as Wayland, but quite acceptable.

    About the worst thing I can say is that it moans my 40W USB-C charger isn't powerful enough. But it charges well enough.

    Doesn't seem remarkably different from XP TBH.

    nmeth,
    @nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Edent weirdly I started getting some adverts displayed within work email messages (outlook on MacOS, backend is O365).
    I mentioned it to our MIS email specialist who said that shouldn't be happening and did something to stop it.

    holy shit I just scored a bargain. a full 2500pc reel of 8-channel CC LED dimmer ICs with latching shift-register inputs, typically retailing at £1600 ex.VAT, for £120 delivered. that's eaten most of my spare cash for the month but it was far too good a deal to pass up, especially combined with the reels of LEDs I got for next to nothing recently.

    nmeth,
    @nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @gsuberland friend of mine had a set of (old school) blinders plotted in for the final part of The Full Monty to cover the, uh, reveal. When the cue fired they tripped the dimmers so half the stage went dark instead!

    Led blinders should be a bit less surgey

    🆕 blog! “Book Review: The Cuckoo's Egg - Clifford Stoll”
    ★★★★★

    This book is outstanding. It's the mid 1980s, you're administrating a nascent fleet of UNIX boxen, and you are tasked with accounting for a 75¢ billing discrepancy. Naturally that eventually leads into an international conspiracy involving the FBI, NSA, and an excellent recipe for chocolate chip cookies. It is…

    @Edent I read that back in the 90s and I am now wondering where I got the copy to read… I guess I probably persuaded the University (or possibly City) library to get a copy as I am sure its not on my bookshelves.

    Definitely not an ebook in that era

    The new Shelly Plus 1 Mini looks fun.

    nmeth,
    @nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @revk Wonder if I can fit that into a standard ceiling rose fitting. I had to get a larger (turned wood) rose to fit a standard Shelly Plus 1 in. I suspect that there will still be too little vertical space to fit it into one of the bog standard fittings.

    I somehow managed to accidentally delete /dev/null and it’s unbelievable how much stuff relies on writing data to nothing.

    • SSH just doesn’t start
    • same with tmux
    • bash completion doesn’t work and spams errors about _upvars
    • I can’t open GUI programs unless I launch them from a terminal that was opened when /dev/null was still there
    • Firefox prints assertion failures, then the error handler segfaults (!!)
    nmeth,
    @nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @fgaz now you need to make and promote a version of mknod that requires /dev/null to start...

    Had my iPhone 13 Mini since June last year. Just noticed the battery maximum capacity is now 87%. Apple support ran diagnostics remotely (which was neat and easy to do) and said this is normal. Is around one per cent per month drop in capacity about right?

    nmeth,
    @nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @popey that’s doing a lot worse than my 1 year old 14 pro (98%) or its predecessor a 4 year old Xs which was around that capacity or better after 4 years on original battery.
