popey,

Had my iPhone 13 Mini since June last year. Just noticed the battery maximum capacity is now 87%. Apple support ran diagnostics remotely (which was neat and easy to do) and said this is normal. Is around one per cent per month drop in capacity about right?

forquare,

@popey my 13 mini from February 2022 is at 86% capacity 🤷‍♂️

Jour,

@popey
Mate that's a lot imo. My Android phone (Realme 6) is currently at 82% and I started using it on July 2020. Just my six cents...if Apple says it's normal then it's normal for Apple.

gecko,

@popey 86% on my 12 mini that I got new May last year.

In my case it's most likely caused by only using the provided charger which does quick charge most of the time which to my knowledge is kinda bad for the battery.

They fact that there's no simply way to replace the battery à la pop the back cover and quickly swap it out is infuriating to me... >.<

@popey it's probably a bit worse than it says it is. It you install Coconut Battery on your Mac and connect the phone via USB you'll see the true horror.

popey,

@JoeRess Neat!

@popey it's so weird how Apple devices just flat out lie about battery levels.

popey,

@JoeRess I mean, so does Linux. But for different reasons. I've had Linux tell me I had 5% left, and then ran for hours more, but also the opposite too.. Fun!

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey surely that's a case of Linux just not knowing though. Given that Apple controls the hardware and software, it's fair to assume that they are choosing to misrepresent battery levels.

popey,

@JoeRess 🤷

@popey @JoeRess Dunno about “lie” per se. Apple’s lovely walled garden is actually fairly good at two things. Battery life and setting expectations. Apple is likely showing, software-wise, what the phone can manage to eke out for the future. Coconut will show the actual status and likely why (cycles, etc). The notation below the remaining battery percentage basically says that Apple has the phone change it’s performance as the battery degrades.

popey,

@JoeRess Great!

@popey 12 mini at 80% after 22 months. 🤷‍♂️

@popey …about right I expect depending on the model, what demands you put on it(basically gaming), and the way you treat it (charging, whether you are more active on Wi-Fi or running off a cell). Sounds nebulous, but it’s basically the size of the battery and how you use it. Example: I don’t game and mostly run off of Wi-Fi…my battery is at 86% for a 12 pro regular size…at a full 3+ years.

nathan,

@popey I've had a few iPhones through the years, and that roughly aligns with the battery degradation I saw on all of them (especially when wireless charging was involved).

@popey Have you 'Optimised Battery Charging" on?

iPhone SE at 85% after 2 years.

I leave mine plugged in most of the time. (I know, not ideal but, old habits....)

popey,

@winkleink It is on.

@JayLittle@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey I have had my iPhone 13 since August of last year and its at 97%. But I go out of my way not to charge it everyday either. Generally I only charge it every 2 to 3 days when the battery gets low (less than 50%)

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@popey mine's at 86% and I've had it since January 2022, so that seems about right. (I also had it explained in the Apple store that that was normal, as part of the eats-all-my-battery debacle.)

perrito,

@popey In the past i have typically changed the battery after about 2 years (when it had reached 80%) which is consistent with what they said. 80 is the "lasts all day" threshold (apple will refuse to change it before that also)

meatlotion,

@popey my OnePlus 6t is like 4+ years old and the battery is still perfect. I recommend OnePlus 6t!

popey,

@meatlotion I don't believe you dot gif.

meatlotion,

@popey thats your prerogative.

dgl,

@popey I’ve had mine since December 2021 and it’s at 86%, so yours does seem a bit high. I find it doesn’t last a whole day with my usage, so I think charging it twice a day (and often doing that by putting it on a Qi charger when it’s at my desk) takes its toll.

popey,

@dgl yeah, the Qi charger on my desk and one in the car can’t be helping. I foresee a battery replacement in my future.

nebucatnetzer,

@popey @dgl I’m not sure that matters. I’ve checked the Apple documentation quickly and for them one charge cycle equals 100% of the battery capacity. Meaning charging four times a bit or once fully are the same. They even explain it like this in diagram.
In addition Li-Io batteries like to stay charged between ca. 20-80% and the optimized charging should help with that.
But it’s certainly the easiest option to try. Sadly there is no easy way to graph it 😉

@popey @dgl

I swap my batteries all the time :wink:

Generally they seem to last about 5 years before degrading below 80%, though still useful for backups when travelling as they're so light.

nebucatnetzer,

@popey Probably a bit on the higher side.
I’m at 90% with a nearly three year old 12 (not Mini).
Apple says 20% decrease per 500 charging cycles is normal. Given that the Mini has a smaller battery you might reach that faster.

nmeth,
@nmeth@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey that’s doing a lot worse than my 1 year old 14 pro (98%) or its predecessor a 4 year old Xs which was around that capacity or better after 4 years on original battery.

ojars,
@ojars@mstdn.kapteinis.lv avatar

@popey I've had mine for a year (since October). I charge it mostly at night, so it's usually in battery-saving mode.

jannem,
@jannem@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey
That sounds high to me. But maybe if you're charging it full every night that's possible I guess.
