@romin @Fullmetal2255 @coolboymew I was listening to the first Thomas Covenant audiobook last night at work and fell in love with the series all over again (I first read it as a young adult in 2005). it's an extremely bleak and harrowing fantasy novel with many elements that would later show up in isekai:

1. a miserable loser protagonist in the current year who suffers a vehicle crash, then wakes up in a magical fantasy land where he is being summoned by people who think he is a hero
2. the hero has mysterious powers that he needs to learn to control or everyone will die
3. a whole host of characters (including a teenage girl) who help him on his quest (even though he's a dick)
4. beautiful, wondrous landscapes that Miyazaki would probably like to animate
5. Eastern and Western mystical shit everywhere (the author worked in a hospital for lepers in India in the 1960s)
6. an evil overlord who manipulates people and events into enacting his master plan (which is to escape The Land and infect the real world with his evil), who our hero must oppose, though he doesn't know how

but it has one element I've never seen in other isekai. the protagonist thinks the fantasy world is a dream and he refuses to believe it; he's just hallucinating it all after that car hit him, and when he wakes up he'll be back in the real world, dying of the disease that ruined his life, so he can't let his guard down and accept this fantasy world or he'll go insane. he thinks his unbelief is his salvation.

the people believe so strongly that he is the hero from another land who will save them from a great evil, but his stubbornness and unbelief in The Land leads him to tolerate or even commit acts of evil himself. Thomas Covenant is such a miserable bastard that he refuses to be a hero, refuses to acknowledge the things happening around him. it's all a dream, after all; magic only exists in dreams, and dreams are for fools.

if the Thomas Covenant novels were written in the past decade, I would assume they were a very dark parody of isekai anime. but no, they are American novels written starting in 1976. if they are a parody of any isekai, it would have to be Narnia and The Wizard of Oz, not anything from Japan.
