Aston Martin and Porsche Preview Next-Gen CarPlay Interfaces
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/12/20/aston-martin-porsche-carplay

ns,

@daringfireball The “screens everywhere” look is dated.

The Tesla aesthetic is that technology should be invisible. The one modestly-sized (by modern standards) screen in a Model Y is the only hint of all the underlying tech.

Having lots of screens is a super-gadgety experience. It makes me think of fiddling with settings and customizing things and other hassles. Such tech demands to be visible and managed and babysat.

ns,

@mjgardner @daringfireball Like you I don’t want a distracting gadget experience in my car. New CarPlay will make that problem worse.

But Tesla’s screen really is modestly sized, even if it’s still too big. Take a look:

ns, to AppleMusic

My is quite a mix. I wonder if I can tell Apple Music to keep track of what music I play in different contexts.

In the car with the kids, I choose a family-friendly pop station. So my top artists are Miley Cyrus (“Flowers”) and Harry Styles. They aren’t my favorites but they are the artists I played the most.

And during work I play spacey ambient music as background noise. I spend a lot of time listening to it but it isn’t my preferred music outside of that context.

ns,

This has been fixed in iOS 17.2. Now I just need to start using focus modes.

🌟 I just wanted to know if the drink machine was broken.

(If you can actually make it to the end of this, and I'm not sure anyone will, you'll learn a little Chipotle phone system hack. Also it's on my blog: https://cabel.com/2023/10/12/i-just-really-dont-like-automated-phone-systems/)

ns,

@cabel Oh my god the fake typing sounds.

Missing Apple Features and Products

High-impact or noticeably missing features and products for 2023 (Part 1/2):

  • Custom Apple Watch faces
  • Reminders in the Calendar app
  • Custom search engine in Safari
  • Albums in Photos Shared Library
  • Clipboard history
  • Passwords is an app
  • Clear and separate volume controls for audio, ringer, and Siri voice
  • iCloud Private Relay system-wide (VPN)
  • Landscape mode but only for video
  • Xcode for iPad 🥹

@apple_enthusiast

ns,

@apple_enthusiast (Part 2/2) And here are items from last year’s list that were delivered in 2023. 🎉

  • Multiple timers
  • ✅ iOS 17 - Gruber finally
  • Apple Music in landscape on iPhone
  • Partial: iOS 17 Standby mode
  • Tapback with any emoji
  • ✅ iOS 17
  • Strange implementation: Drag an emoji from the keyboard into a message
  • AirTags shared with family members
  • ✅ iOS 17/macOS Sonoma

What are your favorite new features? What else is missing?

ns,

@apple_enthusiast Note for Mastodon readers: I cross posted this to Lemmy. Let’s see how it works!

ns,

@anolemmi It’s supposed to be automatic as to which volume level is adjusted. For example, if you adjust the volume while Siri is speaking, it adjusts the Siri volume (only). But I find it tricky to quickly grab the phone and adjust it before Siri stops talking.

It’s understandable that users are confused that invisible volume levels are being adjusted; and either the one they wanted was not adjusted or others were adjusted unintentionally.

Edit: tag @apple_enthusiast

ns,

@acosmichippo More customization in that area would be great.

The closest you can get to that today is to set Watch faces based on the Focus mode you are using. But that isn’t going to be linked to the low-power setting.

ns,

@anolemmi Hmm. This reply didn’t get mirrored to Lemmy.

ns,

@Venicon The iPad calculator is an obvious one that I missed. I’ll add that to my list for next time.

And you aren’t the only one who’s mentioned Health app improvements. The medication feature needs to be more visible and easier to log than just the timed notification that it sends.

Edit: Some of my replies are not showing up on Lemmy. Maybe I need to tag @apple_enthusiast

ns,

@Scooter411 Only works in Standby mode (when your phone is charging and is upright on its side). I wish it was a more complete implementation. @apple_enthusiast

ns,

@nave It’s only used in Safari. Apps and other browsers reveal your real IP address.

rollin up to the TV store all,

howdy feller! you got any NON-smart items? gimme the most dumbest TV you got! just the absolute moron of televisions.

I need an LED screen stupider than a box of below-average-intelligence rocks!

my next TV should make the village idiot look like a Nobel Prizewinner.

Get me an entertainment system SO stupid, SO bereft of intelligence that it's practically a US citizen who votes Republican!

ns,

@bitprophet @timrichards I gave up and bought a smart TV. Then disabled the smarts. https://www.consumerreports.org/electronics/privacy/how-to-turn-off-smart-tv-snooping-features-a4840102036/

Wi-Fi stays off unless I need to update firmware. These TVs are so smart that they will have annoying bugs with HDR or 7.1 that can only be fixed by firmware updates.

ns, to Apollo

is gone, is dead (to me), but wefwef.app is the best client.

It’s a web app that looks and feels just like a native app. I think web apps like this are the future of apps on platforms. They don’t need to be approved by Apple, developers can add features and fix bugs quickly, and they can choose their own business model (including open source).

ns,

When Steve Jobs talked about a “sweet solution” for iOS apps I thought he meant web apps would be first-class citizens. It took me a moment to realize it was a “shit sandwich”, in the words of @gruber.

Web apps have come a long way. Now they can look and act like real iOS apps. Native apps are still needed to access hardware features not exposed by web APIs, but that list gets smaller every day. (Hello .)

Turn your phone into an EchoShow.

I hope this magsafe stand is a new product. The existing apple magsafe stuff kinda sucks.
