On the road again, off to TIA to get our first fight. Hopefully all the team will be home by early evening!

Those abandoned narrow gauge railways in Alto Adige are annoyingly wiggly. I’m starting to be a bit afraid of mapping Austria!

@lewd Interesting. Back when I had a BahnCard 100, it felt more like “Ach, we’d rather you’d buy regular tickets.”

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@tml @lewd It’s the equivalent of a full price return trip Berlin to Köln once a month and then some - and nobody pays full price, like, ever.

You’re a really good customer with a BahnCard 100, even if it saves you money. That’ll just be synergy …

OK

Let's have a closer look at this “Arriva wants to run a Groningen-Paris train by 2025" story

News in Dutch here:
https://nos.nl/regio/groningen/artikel/403576-arriva-wil-trein-groningen-parijs-5-30-uur-weg-en-om-10-40-uur-op-gare-du-nord-update

In this 🧵 I'll assess each aspect of it - timetable and paths, rolling stock, operations

I’m pretty sure Groningen-Paris tickets would sell like hot cakes - that's not the problem

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon Almere – Weesp has twelve (!) trains per hour and direction. They do occasionally run the Berlin train via this route but I now can’t remember if they then cancel a Sprinter for it.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@tristramg @jon Note that Renfe currently is only allowed as far north as Lyon. French certifications are on a line-by-line basis.

Arriva is planning a direct train Groningen-Paris by 2026 https://nos.nl/r/403576 @seatsixtyone @jon

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @casblaauw @alard42 @seatsixtyone I thought the plan was 407 for France and 408 for Benelux?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @casblaauw @alard42 @seatsixtyone Also, I don’t think DB is actually certified as a passenger rail operator in France. The only non-SCNF operator allowed on high speed lines seems to be Renfe and they can only go from the Perpignan to Marseille and Lyon.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @casblaauw @alard42 @seatsixtyone Ah, yes, sorry. Interestingly, they are also allowed to go via Pontarlier, Vallorbe, and Ventimiglia.

Are there other German words than Duisburg where “ui” is pronounced as ü? (Come to think of it, that is not a very common letter pair in German, is it?)

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@tml It’s not a diphthong in standard orthography, so if it exists, it would be pronounced as two consecutive vowels. The only thing I can think of now is an exclamation of minor surprise – “Ui!”

More problematic is “oi”’which you’d want to pronounce as “eu” but it is actually a long o in western Germany. So, Troisdorf is “Trohsdorf” not “Treusdorf.” Good test for the geography knowledge of a train manager.
