It is really rather delightful how much Pratchett not doing chapters is upsetting this e-book reader.

Fun in Amsterdam Zuid. No trains from and to Schiphol. Metro 50 cancelled. Metro 52 delays due to overcrowding.

The main problem: There are mo bars in the area to sit this out. And I don’t like any of the restaurants.

Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen is completely bonkers. Why is there even a park in the middle?!

partim,

@smveerman It used to be there before they build the big roads.

Build the Lanes recently made a video about it: https://youtu.be/CjPduPmTT58?si=tDcHtI38DeHIlKYd

Ah

We’ve got another example of that legendary cooperation between state railways today in Köln

Where the Eurostar* stops at the platform is NOT shown on the screens (while for RE and ICE trains it is shown)

So Eurostar employs a person on the platform to tell passengers where to stand 🤦‍♂️

    • Eurostar is 55% SNCF, 18% SNCB
partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon Worse, anecdotally,* they also don’t show any real-time information. The train will just disappear off the screen after scheduled departure.

  • Seen in Aachen a while ago.
partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@grlodi @jon One still hopes that all the operators will one day get together with DB InfraGO and let them publish all real-time information and produce passenger information themselves.

I love the sound of the wind rushing over a pantograph at high speed when you are sitting directly underneath it. Smells like... Victory

View from a train travelling at 125mph, and looking up at the roof which is lower to accommodate the pantograph well

@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @25kV The best seats in SBB’s ICN trains are right under the breaker and there is a neutral section leaving Zurich HB for Zug. I’ve done this trip a million times and still jumped half a metre every single time.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @25kV If you’re there next, go from Basel to Geneva or Lausanne via Biel. The line is first runs through some deep valleys of the Jura mountains and then along lake shores. Beats going via Bern by a mile.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @25kV I understand the sentiment but would urge you to reconsider. For one, some of the quirkiest railways are there …

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies Definitely from Martigny up to the Vallorcine. In my book the most impressive railway in all of Switzerland. There are a few more quite steep lines in that area out of Aigle and Bex.

The best bit of the MOB is the climb out of Montreux – you can turn that into a loop Montreux – Montbovon – Romont – Lausanne.

And then there’s Jura. Neuchâtel to La-Chaux-de-Fonds is pretty cool, from there onwards on the narrow gauge to Le Noirmont and either Glovelier or Tavannes.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies But basically, all the lines branching off the main lines into the mountains are worth doing. Almost all of them are operated by their own small railway company and have their own distinct character. And somehow there’s lots of them in Romandy.

This “Aufbruch Schiene” declaration is all very well, but you need political will - notably from the European Commission - to do it. I’m not sure we’re going to get that… PDF: https://bahnindustrie.info/fileadmin/Sonstiges/Gemeinsame_Erkl%C3%A4rung_Aufbruch_Schiene_2024.pdf

@jon It would be nice if it weren’t just a Other People Should Do Stuff kind of thing and would contain some commitments by the signatories.

Like, DB is part of this, so instead of saying “The EU must push ETCS,” there should be a commitment by DB to speed up rollout on their own terms.

From 22 May, SNCF in ticket offices or through SNCF Connect can no longer sell you tickets for at least these neighbouring railways (this list might not be complete)

NS 🇳🇱
SNCB 🇧🇪
SBB* 🇨🇭
Renfe 🇪🇸
Trenitalia 🇮🇹
DB** 🇩🇪
ÖBB 🇦🇹

The scale of this absurd decision is amazing. And it plays right into the hands of the likes of Trainline

    • except Lyria
      ** - except cross border FR-DE TGVs and ICEs

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @threedaymonk The sources are on Github and you could try ufo2otf to convert them. No idea whether the results are any good.

Also, apparently Inter is based off of Roboto, so you could see if you could get away with switching to that.

These signals at the end of the platforms in Bussums with a level crossing right behind are interesting. If a train is passing through the station, they can go green with the barriers still open and have the barriers triggered by track circuits, but if a train is stopping, the signal stays red and only goes green once the barriers are closed.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Oskar456 AFAIK, that’s not a thing in Germany. Either a level crossing is signal protected or not.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

Also note how there is no overlap. That’s not a thing in the Netherlands at all.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@andrewprice The signal stays red between trains so it seems to always be “manually” triggered.

My thinking is that if it is triggered, they check if the section before it is occupied and if so trigger the barriers and delay the signal going green. Otherwise the barriers are triggered by the train entering the section.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@andrewprice I think it’s to do with the original ATB not being able to signal a stop aspect, so an overlap is of limited use.
